IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Joan Shirley
Anderson
January 23, 1932 – July 24, 2017
Joan was born in 1932 in Ivanhoe, Minnesota, to Oscar and Myrtle Gudmundson and was one of twelve children. She met Bill Anderson and they were married in October 1951, in the Icelandic Lutheran Church near Ivanhoe, MN. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Rapid City, SD. Bill started his own business, and their family grew to include six children.
After moving to Rapid City, Joan embraced her new community and church, Trinity Lutheran. She was active in a "Mother's Club," became a member of Esther Circle, served on the Altar Guild, and taught Sunday school for many years. She joined Beta Sigma Phi sorority, volunteered for Black Hills Workshop in its early years of establishment, joined Black Hills Toastmistress, volunteered at Rapid City Hospital, and was a member of Sons of Norway. In addition to raising six children, she made time to take classes at South Dakota School of Mines. Bill and Joan retired in 1979 and soon after began their yearly winter excursions to Mesa, AZ, where they met many new friends.
Bill and Joan had six children; a son, Bill (Loni) Anderson, Rapid City, five daughters, Wendy (Dennis) Hanken, Rapid City, Connie (Gary) Merritt, Inver Grove Heights, MN, Debra (Tom) Throgmorton, Ft. Collins, CO, Patty (Pete) Klauck, Broomfield, CO, and Jeanie (Luis) Maese, Glendale, AZ. She had 16 grandchildren; Anna Niemann, Nicole Sears, Jill Hibbard, Alex, Krista, Tyler, and Lindsey Merritt, Kaitlyn and Brett Throgmorton, Peter, Jacob, and Anne Klauck, Michelle Maese, Alyson Van Voris, and Billy and Brittney Anderson. She had 8 great grandchildren, all of whom will miss their "Grandma Joan" very much. Joan's many nieces and nephews will miss her as well, especially her quick wit, sense of humor, and words of advice.
Joan is survived by her brothers, Willard (Irene) Gudmundson, Gordon (Nancy) Gudmundson, and Dean Gudmundson, and sisters, Norma (Dick) Moeller and Clarice (Steve) Mattoon, and her brother-in-law, Joe Berns. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; her son-in-law, Pete Klauck; her grandchildren, Anna and Tyler; sisters, Doris (Alvin) Larson, Dorothy (Larry) Lien, and Ardis Berns; and brothers, Eugene, Orvin, and Harvey.
Joan always cherished her family and friends and kept in touch with everyone she met, making life-long connections all during her life. Her thoughtfulness even brought her another "Granddaughter", Stephanie Lukkes. She welcomed the opportunity for new friendships while at Echo Ridge and Clarkson. The family wishes to express their thanks to the Clarkson staff for the love and care she received during her last months.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., on Friday, July 28, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home.
A funeral service is scheduled for 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, July, 29, at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Wilbur Holz officiating. Burial services will be on Monday, July 31, at Black Hills National Cemetery.
A memorial has been established for Trinity Lutheran Church Radio Fund and Clarkson Health Care.
