Obituary

RAPID CITY - Joan Elizabeth Goschke, 76, Rapid City, died early Saturday, Aug. 23, 2008, at Rapid City Regional Hospital of an aortic aneurysm. Joan was born to George Sr. and Ethel Klein on the Fourth of July, 1932 in Bucks County, Pa. She graduated from nurses training at Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing and entered the Air Force. Serving as a 2nd Lieutenant in Spokane, Wash., Joan met and married Richard Goschke in 1957. Joan and Dick lived in numerous places and ultimately settled in Rapid City along with their five children. Beginning with piano lessons at age three, music carried Joan all through her life. She played and sang at home, in public venues and churches. She taught piano, directed choirs and organized performances, bringing great enjoyment to others as well as herself. She directed her energies in many areas. She was a nurse for more than 50 years, a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She was the motivating force behind the re-settling of more than 130 refugees, was involved in AIDS education and support, envisioned an AIDS orphanage, and participated in spiritual communities and religiously dug dandelions from her lawn. Joan had an uncanny ability to continually pursue her visions despite obstacles and adversity. Her strong faith and dedication to service was a motivating force behind her actions. Survivors include her husband Richard; three daughters, Sherri O'Brien, Spearfish, and Kally Goschke and Genni Goschke, both of Minneapolis; a son, Rick Goschke, Naalehu, Hawaii; a brother, George Klein Jr., Chalfont, Pa.; and two sisters, Ann Hoskins, Corbin, Ky., and Mary Badman, Rocky Mount, Va. A daughter, Laurie Carlisle, preceded her in death. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, at Canyon Lake United Methodist Church, 3500 Canyon Lake Road, with the Rev. Kent Millard officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date. Memorials have been established for Rapid City Regional Hospital Auxiliary Hospice House and Orphans of AIDS.
