Obituary

Sioux Falls Joan Smolik, 69, Sioux Falls and formerly of Rapid City, died Saturday, February 25, 2012 from a short illness, while surrounded by her loving family at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Joan Carol Smolik was born March 28, 1942 at Rapid City, SD to Anton Joseph and Viola Catherine [Alley] Smolik. She grew to adulthood and attended school in Rapid City and graduated from Rapid City High School in 1960. She worked at various businesses in Rapid City. She retired in 2007 from the accounting department at Black Hills Federal Credit Union following more than 25 years of employment with them. In June of 2011 she moved to Sioux Falls, SD. While living in Rapid City she was an active member of Blessed Sacrament Church where she was involved with JustFaith, Lenten Soup Suppers, home bound meals, bible study and also volunteered at Love, Inc. She enjoyed yard work, her flower gardens, crafts, knitting, watercolors, reading, hiking, and spending time with family. Joan was a strong woman who had a great zest for life. She was a fighter throughout her life whether raising her son as a single parent or fighting her cancer diagnoses in the summer of 2011 and beating it. If she could pass on one important lesson to someone she loved, it would be to relax and enjoy life and live for God. To quote Joan, The thing I would most like people to remember about me is basically I am hard on the outside and soft on the inside. Her smiling face will be missed by many. Survivors include her son: Michael [Sue] Smolik of Omaha, NE; her twin brother: Jim [Anne] Smolik of Brookings; and three sisters: Lynne Grabowska of Brookings, Shary Bozied of Seattle, WA, and Barb [Ed] Lee of Rapid City; a sister-in-law: Roberta Alley of Seattle, WA. and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, infant brother: Joseph, brother: Jack and brothers-in-law: Lloyd Grabowska and David Bozied. There will be a Scripture Wake Service at 7:00 pm Sunday, March 4 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home, 2700 Jackson Boulevard, Rapid City, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am, Monday, March 5 at Blessed Sacrament Church, 4500 Jackson Boulevard, Rapid City, with Rev. Brian Lane as celebrant. In Lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Love Inc., PO Box 3255, Rapid City, SD 57709. Expressions of sympathy can be sent to Mike & Sue Smolik, 16514 Camden Circle, Omaha, NE, 68116.
