RAPID CITY- JoAnn (Coughlin) Cheever passed away at the Westhills Village Health Care Center on Saturday, April 28, 2012. She was born on February 13, 1930 at home in Spearfish, SD to Joe and Lura (Starr) Coughlin. After moving several times in her youth, the family settled in Belle Fourche, where JoAnn was active in high school activities and with the Belle Fourche Cowboy Band. After graduating from Belle Fourche high School in 1948, JoAnn attended South Dakota State University where she earned a degree in education, graduating in 1952. While attending SDSU, JoAnn met the love of her life, Gene Cheever and they were united in marriage on June 18, 1952. They lived in Mitchell and Watertown, SD before settling in Belle Fourche in 1956. While living in Belle Fourche, JoAnn was appointed to The Academic Master Plan for Higher Education, which was a great experience. In 1974, the Cheever family moved to Dickinson, ND. After retirement in 1989, Gene and JoAnn moved to their cabin on Hanna Creek in their beloved Black Hills. They split time between their winter home in Sun Lakes, AZ and the cabin. JoAnn loved her family, which included four sons, Pat (Peggy) Cheever, Castle Rock, CO; Dan (Janet) Cheever, Eden Prairie, MN; Todd (Judy) Cheever, Brandon, SD; Tim (Vonna) Cheever, Rapid City; eight grandchildren, John (Megan), Kelli, Nicole, Alison, Cory, Erin, Jared, and Eli. JoAnn was preceded in death by her husband Gene, her parents, Lura and Joe Coughlin and her brother, Starr Coughlin. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at Our Lady Chapel, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Inurnment will be at a later date in Brookings. A memorial has been established for Make A Wish Foundation of South Dakota.
