IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Joann
Thomson
February 24, 1943 – September 1, 2018
Joann Thomson, age 75, of Rapid City passed away on September 1st, 2018 at the Hospice House in Rapid City. She passed peacefully and is now in the arms of Jesus.
Joann Marshall was born on February 24th, 1943 in Crawford, Nebraska to Chester and Arvilla Marshall. The family moved to Deadwood, South Dakota, then Sundance, Wyoming, and eventually back to Deadwood. As a young child in Deadwood, Joann became close friends with Patty Thomson. Little did she know, Patty 's uncle, Rodger, would become her future husband. She graduated from Deadwood High School in 1961 where she made many lifetime friends. Among those, six of them, plus Joann, became known as the "Sexy 7". They shared great times together and made wonderful life long memories. Upon graduation, Joann stayed in Deadwood and worked for First National Bank where she met her beautiful friend, Rosemary Hogan, whom she loved dearly.
Joann married Rodger Thomson on April 18th, 1964 in Deadwood, South Dakota. From that union, three daughters were born: Kelley, Denise, and Christie. After moving to Central City for awhile, she met a new friend, Joan Conlon, who quickly became someone she cherished and loved deeply. She will always be a part of the family. The family moved to Rapid City, where they made their home for many years. Joann worked as Assistant Vice President of First Federal Savings and Loan. In 1985, Joann and Rodger sold everything and moved to Juneau, Alaska. Their time in Alaska was some of the best years of their lives. They bought a boat called the Snow Goose and spent countless hours fishing, whale watching, and just enjoying God's beautiful land and sea. After leaving Juneau, they spent a year in Salt Lake City and then returned to the Black Hills where they retired and lived out the rest of their lives.
Joann was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved all of her kids and grandkids so much. She didn 't need material things to make her happy, she just loved the simple life. Family time was what she cherished the most. She loved being with Rodger on long road trips through the Western U.S. and Canada. She enjoyed reading, playing cribbage, visiting with people, and the Denver Broncos. She was a beautiful, loving person who cared more about others than herself. No matter what life threw at her, she was the one asking others if they were okay. She had a smile and a hug for everyone. She was loved by many and will be greatly missed.
Although all of Joann 's friends meant the world to her, Buster Cleveland, Esther Goerndt, and Arlene Jockheck held a very special place in her heart.
She is survived by two daughters, Kelley (Allen) Comp, Denise (Vinh) Nguyen, sister Leona, and brother Chester Jr. (Carole) Marshall, eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren, all of Rapid City. She was preceded in death by her husband Rodger, daughter Christie, her parents, brother Gary, and sisters Betty and Delores.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 11, 2018 at Christ Church at 1900 Evergreen Dr. at 10:30am. Visitation at the church will be from 9:00am to 10:30am prior to the service. Burial will be at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis after the luncheon.
