Obituary

Our Dad, Grandpa, and Great Grandpa was part of the "Greatest Generation", he was our HERO.  He passed away on the morning of June 16, 2022 at Fountain Springs nursing home.

He was born in Minneapolis, MN April 23, 1927. He attended schools there and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1944 and served in the European Theatre during WWII, until being honorably discharged in 1946. He was a member of U.S. Navy Reserve from 1947-1955.

He moved to Sioux Falls, SD where he met and married Louise Nelson. They were blessed with four children, Wayne, Dennis, Sandra and Jan.

His law enforcement career began in 1950 with the Sioux Falls Police Dept.  In January 1953 he joined the South Dakota Highway Patrol. He was stationed for a short time in Sioux Falls and then moved to Elk Point, SD, where he was stationed for 10 years. Promoted to Lieutenant in 1963, he was assigned to Rapid City, SD, where he served until 1973. During this period, Louise his wife of 20 years passed away in November of 1968.  In 1972 he married Hazel Rongved of Rapid City, SD. Promoted to Captain in 1973, he assumed the position of District Commander of Sioux Falls, SD. Reassigned to District Commander at Aberdeen, SD in 1980.  He retired in March of 1981 after twenty-eight years of service with the South Dakota Highway Patrol.

He and Hazel moved back to Rapid City. In 1984, he went back to work as a Special Deputy U.S. Marshal for Court Security. Serving for a time as supervisor in this capacity.  Spending 12 years in this position, he retired in 1996.  His hobbies were golfing, fishing, and hunting.  He was one of the biggest cheerleaders for his kids, grandkids and great grandkids. Family meant the world to him.  He attended many plays, programs, volleyball and basketball games, and track meets when his health allowed him to.

During his law enforcement career, he had the opportunity to attend numerous training schools, including the FBI National Academy.

He was a member of many organizations, including: FBI National Academy
Assoc., SDHP Retirees Assoc., SD Peace Officers Assoc., Elk Pont Masonic Lodge, Yankton Consistory, NAJA Shrine, RC Elks Lodge, VFW, American Legion and many others.

He was preceded in death by his wives, Louise(1968) and Hazel(2017), his parents, brothers Richard and Chester, sister Mrs. Robert (Mildred) Morris and step-son Kirk Rongved.

He is survived by Sons ,Wayne Anderson (Custer) and Dennis(Colleen) Anderson (Two Harbors, MN) Daughters, Sandra (Dwight) Fischer (RC) and Jan Anderson (RC) Step-daughter Regina(Jay) VanWyk (RC)

Grandchildren: Danielle(Todd) Wiebers, Kelli(Cory) Sorenson, Carrie(Adam) Ohman, Jill (Max) Ayars, Katie (Tom) Mousel, Chelsea VanWyk, Zachary (Sammi) VanWyk

Great grandchildren: Mary Wiebers, Portia Wiebers. Conor Sorenson, Nola Ayars, Harper Ayars, Griffin Mousel, Hudson Mousel, Anderson Ohman and bonus ones Lux and Fallyn . All who he  loved dearly.

And many nieces, nephews and other relatives he kept in contact with.

Special thanks to our sister, Jan,  who lived  with and cared for Dad these last two years, allowing him to stay in his home.

Also, thanks to Fountain Springs Nursing Home and Monument Hospice, for all the support they have given.

Funeral will be Thursday June 23, 2022 at 10 AM at Faith Lutheran Church, Rapid City and burial with SDHP Honor Guard and Military Honors will be at National Cemetery  at Noon. Luncheon at 1PM at Elks Lodge in Rapid City.

Memorials will be established for Shriners Travel Fund and Faith Lutheran Church.
