Dr. John Ford Barlow, MD, 91, died on Friday, September 20, 2024 in Rapid City.
John was born March 12, 1933, in Glen Ridge, New Jersey. He graduated from the Montclair Academy in 1951 and from Dartmouth College in 1955. He finished a two-year medical program at Dartmouth in 1957 and received his MD from Harvard Medical School in 1958.
While he was a medical student at Dartmouth, John met Anne Eldora Woodbury, of Woodstock, NH and married her in 1957.
John completed his residency in Pathology at the Massachusetts General Hospital in 1963 and then spent two years of active-duty service at Womack Army hospital at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
John was lured to Sioux Falls, SD by a fellow medical school resident from South Dakota. He became a partner at the Laboratory of Clinical Medicine in 1965. During his tenure at the LCM, he taught at the University of South Dakota Medical School as well as teaching local students in medical technology at Sioux Valley Hospital. In 1984 he joined the Clinical Laboratory of the Black Hills in Rapid City, South Dakota and continued to practice and teach. He retired from practice in 2003. John and his wife Anne were active supportive members of the Black Hills Arts community. John served on the boards of the Black Hills Playhouse and was involved in fundraising for numerous other local arts organizations.
During his career, John received numerous teaching awards and was inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame in 2016. He was a member of the South Dakota Medical Society, the College of Pathologists, the Association of Clinical Pathologists, the Association of Blood Banks, the Society of Microbiology, and the Society of Nuclear Medicine. John was also chief-of-staff at both Sioux Valley and Rapid City Regional Hospital and was a member of the board of directors at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
John is survived by his two daughters, Deborah Barlow Smedstad (Gus), Albuquerque, NM and Karen Barlow Boulineaux (Wallace), Vienna, VA, as well as three grandchildren: Christina, Scott and Julianne. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anne and his parents Mary Adele Smith Barlow and John Philip Barlow.

His Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be Saturday, September 28, 2024 at 11:00 am at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. A reception will follow at the Hotel Alex Johnson - Lincoln Room from Noon to 2:00 p.m.
Burial of Cremains will take place privately at Mt. View Cemetery.
