Obituary

RAPID CITY - John Arnold "Jack" Gasseling, 87, passed away on Tuesday, November 21, 2023.   Jack was born January 31, 1936 to John Bernard and Martha Leona (Thompson) Gasseling in Hemingford, Nebraska.  As a young man, he enlisted in the U.S. Army where he was assigned to be a meat cutter supplying soldiers with meals.  After being honorably discharged, he returned to food service as a butcher at the grocery store in Chadron, NE.  Later he moved to Rapid City and retired from Safeway after many years of service.

Jack enjoyed restoring classic John Deere tractors and still maintained a small farm in Nebraska where he still kept a John Deere.  He also was a member of the B.P.O.E (Elk's Club) and was recently recognized as having been a member for 65 years.    Later in life, he met Selina Marie Collins at a Saturday night dance and they were married on June 24, 2001.

Jack is survived by his wife, Selina, son, John Gasseling, step-children; Johnny McGriff (Shelly), Judy Ann Price (Bill), step-grandchildren; Mandy McGriff, John Luke McGriff, Curtis Price, Steve Price and Danielle Price as well as his step-great and step-great-greatgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Nila McGriff, sister, Rosemary Coplen and his brother, Gene Gasseling.

Jack will always be fondly remembered as a kind, gentle and quiet man.

Friends and family are invited to a memorial service on Wednesday, November 29, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. to be held at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home.  Light refreshments will follow the service and interment will take place at Black Hills National Cemetery at 1:00 p.m.

Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the Civilian Conservation Corps Museum of South Dakota in Hill City.
