Obituary

PIEDMONT- John R. Honerkamp Sr., 93, died peacefully at home on Sunday, March 10, 2013, surrounded by his wife and family. He was born March 6, 1920 in St. Louis, Missouri. He attended St. Ann's grade school in Normandy, MO, and in 1936 he enrolled at the David Ranken School of Mechanical Trades in St. Louis and graduated in 1938. He was a building contractor in that area until 1942, when he joined the U.S. Navy Construction Battalion and for three years built bridges and piers in the South Pacific during World War II. In 1945, he settled in the Piedmont, SD area, established the Covered Wagon Resort, and continued in the building business. He married Marie D. Cook of St. Louis, MO in 1948 and together they reared eight children. Honerkamp was a charter member of the Piedmont Volunteer Fire Department, the charter president of the South Dakota Campground Owners Association, served on the Piedmont Board of Education for 10 years, and was a board member of the Piedmont Cemetery Association since 1976. He authored two books, "Wheelchair Vacationing in South Dakota" and "At the Foot of the Mountain," a history of the Piedmont area. Honerkamp was injured in a construction accident in 1963, which left him a quadriplegic for the remainder of his life. His survivors include his wife of 65 years, Marie, Piedmont; and all eight children, Bill (Paula) Honerkamp, Bruce (Vicki) Honerkamp and Kathleen (Daniel) Hoskin, all of Piedmont, Nancy (Clifford) Coleman, Clark Fork, Idaho, Jack (Kate) Honerkamp, Chadron, Neb., Christine (Rick) Evers, Ocala, Fla., Mary Anne (Brad) Lynes, Corvallis, Mont., and Jody (Tim) Jackson, Durham, N.C.; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, at the Mother Butler Center in Rapid City, with a Christian wake service at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 14, at St. Isaac Jogues Church, with the Rev. David Matzko, SJ, officiating. Burial will be at Piedmont Cemetery, with military honors by the Piedmont American Legion Post 311 Honor Guard and the South Dakota National Guard. Memorials have been established for the Piedmont Cemetery Association and St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church.
