John Rolland Johnson, 86, of Rapid City, died Monday, Feb. 1, 2016, at the Fort Meade Veterans Hospice.

He was born on May 29, 1929, in Canton, SD, to Leo and Rebecca (Eiesland) Johnson. John Rolland graduated from Canton High School in 1947 and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and in Greenland. Afterwards he attended the SD School of Mines. He was united in marriage to Mary Knoer on August 1, 1955, in Whittemore, IA. He was an IBEW Local 1250 member for 40 years.

Survivors include his wife, Mary; three sons, Tim (wife Vesta), Tom (wife Wanna Gay), and Jay (wife Tina); one grandson; three great-grandsons; four granddaughters; two great-granddaughters; and a sister, JoAnn.

A Christian funeral mass will be offered at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help with Father Michel Mulloy presiding.

Burial, with military honors rendered by Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and the SD Army National Guard will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
