John C. Torrey, 63, of New Underwood, died at his home on Saturday, April 28, 2018 after a lengthy illness.

He was born on November 7, 1954 in Yankton to John "Jack" and Marylou (Black) Torrey.

John was raised in Rapid City graduating from Stevens High School in 1972.

He married Rhonda Filibeck on September 30, 1978 in Keystone.

The Black Hills were John's passion. He and Rhonda spent countless hours hiking with their dogs. He had an amazing familiarity of the hills and knew where he was in at all times. He shared his knowledge and enjoyment of rock climbing with friends and family. John enjoyed playing the guitar.

He achieved his EMT and served faithfully with the New Underwood Volunteer Fire Department and Ambulance. John was a member of the South Dakota Black Hills Firefighters Association.

John is survived by his wife, Rhonda, his mother Marylou Torrey, Rapid City, his "Girls", Lil and Hope, his brothers; Bryan Torrey and Matthew (Carol) Torrey, Rapid City and his sisters in law; Donneen Torrey, Minneapolis, Annette (Craig) Engel, Piedmont, Jean (Rich) Cabe, Rapid City and Corinne Harris, Rapid City.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jack and his brother, Mark.

A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home at 2:00pm on Tuesday, May 1, 2018.
