RAPID CITY-Joseph John Boland, 84, Rapid City passed away peacefully at his home on May 18th. He was born May 19,1924 in Farmingdale, SD to Patrick and Lue Cynthia (Kildew) Boland. After attending Cathedral High School in Rapid City he joined the Navy.He marrried Kathryn Becker on Jan. 10, 1944 in Long Island, New York, they had one son. On May 15, 1948 he married Willa Jean Coats in Custer, S.D., they had four daughters. His working career included, railroad, Chauffer for the Bishop, dry cleaner, bartender & package liquor, lawn service, remodled houses including his own, Earth Treasures rock shop, & the Post Office. Upon early retirement form the Post Office he worked at Redwing Shoes, Court Bailiff, & Seeley's For Men. His "love" of baseball and his pitching skills, lead him to coach youth baseball teams in RC. Joe was an avid reader, he was a great story teller, cook, dancer, ice skater & gardener, he enjoyed playing, golf, cribbage , snooker, & watching all sports on TV, doing jig saw and word puzzles, hunting & polishing agates. He was a member of the Canyon Lake Senior Center, past member of the Elks, & a Veteran of World War ll. Joe took "great pride" in how he dressed and had a wonderful sense of humor. He loved his family unconditionally, he will be greatly missed. He is survived by one son Gary Schroeder, his mother Kathryn, Poughkeepsie,NY, four daughters, Karen Boland, Hill City, Nancy (Eric) Hand, Portland, OR, Cindy Boland (Mike) Rapid City, Mary (Corey) Carter, Austin, TX. Five grandchildren, Melissa (Jesse) Bierman, Tavis Sorensen (Rebecca), Shelly Sorensen (Chris), Connor Hand, Scott Stella. One great grandson Cody Stella. One brother Vincent (Kathleen) Boland, Rapid City. Nephews Leo (Bernie) Boland, Charles Boland, Wes Carr. Nieces Loretta (Bernard) Wiehl, Mary Ann Powers, Patty (Larry) Deeg, Lorraine Schleuning, Peggy Mills, June Beliveau, Judy Carr, Carol Ann (Jim) Staedtler, Paula, & their children. He was preceded in death by his wife Willa Jean, his parents, one brother and two sisters. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 27, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home, with a Christian Wake Service and Rosary to follow at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, May 28, at the Blessed Sacrament Church with Father Kerry Prendiville presiding. Interment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. A luncheon will be served after burial at the Blessed Sacrament Church. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund in the name of Joseph Boland has been established for Rapid City Youth Baseball Programs.
