Obituary

Joyce Marie Norris, 94, of Rapid City, passed away at the Westhills Village nursing home on January 22, 2022.

Joyce was born, the sixth of nine siblings, in Buffalo County, SD on January 20, 1928 to Bernie and Clara (Abernathy) Gregg.  Joyce grew up on a ranch on the banks of the Missouri River in what is known as "The Pocket" in the Big Bend area southeast of Pierre.  She graduated from Harrold High School in 1946.  She received her teaching certificate and taught school in one room schoolhouses on the Crow Creek Reservation. She married Loren Norris in 1949 and a few years later they moved to Rapid City, where she lived for over 65 years.  They raised four children:  Sharon (Tom) Zeller of Rapid City, Sandra (Jim) Caplinn of Black Hawk, Larry Norris of Rapid City, and Sheryl (Steve Dell) Norris of Rapid City.

Joyce enjoyed tending her rose garden, playing cards, and baking holiday cookies and candies.  She always stayed in close contact with her parents and siblings, most of whom lived in Hughes County, SD. Joyce touched many lives over the years with her home and office cleaning business, and was a nanny, child caregiver, and house-sitter for many families in the area. In later life, she traveled with her sister, Myrtle, to Hawaii.  She also took a trip with her sisters to Washington, D. C., courtesy of their nephew, Chuck Bollweg, and his wife, Cyndi.

She is survived by her four children and four grandchildren: Angela (Rick) Boeve of Rapid City, Nathan (Trisha) Zeller of Chanhassen, MN, Marc Zeller of Rapid City, and Lysann Zeller of Rapid City; five great-grandchildren; Kyrstin (Kyle) Wurdeman of Piedmont, Zach Boeve of Rapid City, Shaela Boeve of Rapid City, and Madeline Zeller and Rachel Zeller of Chanhassen, MN;  two great-great grandchildren: Kylar Wurdeman and Kymber Wurdeman;  brother-in-law Bill Beastrom.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Billy Gregg, Nick Gregg, Gerald Gregg, and Bernard Gregg; and sisters Lillian Gregg, Mildred Bollweg, Myrtle Cooper, Gloria Beastrom, and her son-in-law Jim Caplinn.

A reception will follow the service at the Terra Sancta Retreat Center.

The inurnment will take place at St. John's Cemetery in Harrold, SD later this year.
