RAPID CITY -- Judith Judy Bergen-Hauff went to be with her beloved Richard on Wednesday, June 4, 2008, with her family at her side. Born to Richard and Evelyn (Lambert) Bergen on Nov. 19, 1935, in Rosebud, she lived primarily on the Rosebud and Pine Ridge Indian Reservations throughout her childhood. She graduated from OgIala Community High School (OCHS) in May 1953, as Valedictorian of her class. She then attended South Dakota State in Brookings, Black Hills State in Spearfish and Northern State College in Aberdeen. On March 29, 1957, she was united in marriage to Richard Hauff in Pine Ridge. Richards career sent them to locations in Minnesota and South Dakota, during which time she worked at various jobs. Upon settling in Rapid City in 1974, she began her civil service career at Sioux San, retiring in 1999. She received several awards during her 25-year career, however, she believed her greatest reward was the satisfaction of serving her people as Contract Health Specialist. To this day, we receive so many compliments about her and how much she was appreciated for the caring manner in which she took care of so many. We also hear many stories about her keeping the staff at the Sioux San smiling and laughing at her wonderful sense of humor. Judy was a loving caretaker to a very large extended family. If she could have whisked everyone's troubles away, she would have. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her. She is survived by six children, Linda and Edward Brumbaugh, King George, VA, David Hauff, Rapid City, Carol Hauff, Pierre, Alan Hauff, Porcupine, Kathleen and Rusty Harr, Columbus, GA, and Sally and Brian Haubrich, Rapid City; eight grandchildren, Aaron Brumbaugh, Darin (Becca) Hauff, Teresa (Bill) Kinnerson, Tyler, Derek and Jacob Pulscher, Brittany Meland and Peyton Haubrich; four great-grandchildren, Kaley and Nina Hauff, Chaska Kinnerson and Madison Brumbaugh; one brother, Patrick and Shirley Bergen, Deadwood; brothers in law, Manuel Torres and Sylvan and Margaret Hauff, all of Rapid City; and one sister in law, Cordelia Hauff, Dupree. She is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, who were all very special to her. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Richard; her parents; two brothers; and grandson, Derek Hauff. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m., on Sunday, June 8, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Services will be at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, June 9, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Kathy Monson Lutes officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, St. Matthew's Episcopal Church or the John T. Vucurevich Cancer Care Institute. Condolences may be sent to the family at 2215 Janet St., Rapid City, SD 57702.
