Obituary

Julie Lynn (Polen) Ostlund, age 56, Berthold, North Dakota went home to the Lord on September 3rd, 2024 at Rapid City Monument Hospital in South Dakota.  In true Julie form, she put up a good fight following a motorcycle accident on August 8th, 2024 on her way to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally with her husband, Newt Sr.  Motorcycles and the love of the open road was one of their shared passions in life and something they loved to do together.   Julie will be missed beyond measure by her family.  She was strong, independent, and always made sure everyone was taken care of.  She left a void in many lives that can never be filled.

Julie was born December 2, 1967 to Jack and Rhoda Polen at Ellsworth Airforce Base in Rapid City, South Dakota.  Julie was the sixth of seven children born to Jack and Rhoda.  Her father, Jack, was stationed at the Minot Air Force Base in 1971, where the family made their home.  They then moved off the base a few miles away to Glenburn, North Dakota, where Julie attended Glenburn Public School.  While attending high school, Julie was active in a variety of sports.  Just as she did in life, she always left everything on the court or the field.  If Julie was there, everyone knew it and knew she was a force to be reckoned with.  Julie graduated from Glenburn High School in 1986.

After high school, Julie attended Bismarck State College for a period of time.  Before completing her degree in Criminal Justice, Julie married Dale Henson in 1989.  Of this union, came her two oldest boys, Cade and Kyle Henson.

Julie had a passion for softball and was well-known and loved by her softball family.  Even many years later as Julie was facing the ultimate battle following her motorcycle accident, many of her fellow teammates reached out offering prayers and well wishes for their softball sister, "Hollywood".  She clearly left an impression on many lives.

In December of 1997, Julie married the love of her life, Newt Ostlund, whom she called "COWBOY", which Julie had tattooed on her right bicep.  Newt and Julie had two more children, Newt Jr. and Jacalynn, which made their beautiful family of six.  Julie took care of Newt like no one else could have.  It took a special person to understand Newt, his work ethic and the long hours he put in day in and day out.  Not only did she understand him, she gave him grace to do what he needed to do, made sure that the home fires were always burning, and made sure there was always ham on the table when he got home.  While taking care of the home, the kids, the yard, the animals, and everything she did for the family business, Julie always managed to work a full-time job.

Baking and cooking were a few of Julie's passions.  She was well known for her amazing cakes, cookies and treats.  Businesses looked forward every Christmas to her "goodie trays" they would receive from Crazy Cowboy Trucking.  Julie showed love and appreciation with her kitchen talents, and you knew you were loved when you were blessed enough to receive one of her goodie plates.

Julie was an exceptional wife, daughter, sister, mom, grandma, aunt, and friend.  Evident throughout the home when you walk in, pictures and tributes of her loved ones adorn each and every wall.  Julie took pride in her home and made sure everyone felt welcomed when they entered.  Julie loved the Christmas Holiday more than any other time of year, although she decorated for each and every one.  Christmas was her favorite time of year.  Walking into her home at Christmas time was like walking into a Winter Wonderland.

Julie fought a heck of a fight following her accident on SD Hwy 79, MM 157.  Prayers were sent from around the world via the Sturgis Rally Facebook Page.  The love and support felt from the biker family has been second to none.  No words can express the gratitude we feel for all the love and support from people praying for Julie and our family.
