Our dear mother, June Ione Fish, 90, passed away Thursday, March 28, 2024, in Rapid City, South Dakota.
June was born in Sanborn, Iowa on March 26, 1934, to Herbert and Lillian (Sittig) Zaiser. During her childhood, the Zaisers moved to the Black Hills, first to Hot Springs before settling in Deadwood. While attending Deadwood High School, June met the love of her life, William (Bill) Fish. They married, and their little family quickly grew to include five children they loved dearly. Bill joined the Marine Corps, and June joined him in service as a Marine wife, journeying around the country to his various stations of duty; California, Nebraska, Virginia, California again, Hawaii, South Dakota when he went to Vietnam, Maryland, and North Carolina.
In between deployments and stations, The Fish family would return to the Black Hills to visit family. Mom loved living in The Hills, enjoyed golfing, gardening and being with family. When Bill retired from the Marine Corps, he and June returned to their beloved Black Hills where they spent the rest of their days.
One of June's favorite activities was the weekly lunch she shared with her sister Claudette and nieces, while their husbands played golf, and for many years after. The sisters were known to spend many hours gallivanting around the Hills, remembering times from their childhood. June loved fried oysters, the beach, gin and tonics, and John Wayne (though her love for John Wayne was due to how much he resembled her beloved Bill). She loved puzzles, her Maltese, Sammy, and holding her grandchildren's faces in her hands to plant a big Grandma kiss.
June has now joined the love of her life and husband of 62 years, Bill, her parents; grandson, Michael Paul; brother, La Verne Zaiser; sister, Claudette Newman; brother in law, Leonard Newman; sister in law, Betty Zaiser; nephew, David Zaiser; and daughter in law, Veronica Fish.
June will be greatly missed by those she leaves behind. She is survived by her loving children, Richard (Linda) Fish of Albuquerque, NM; Kevin Fish of Deadwood; Kenny (Mary) Fish of Custer; Lauri Fish of Rapid City; and Becky (Mack) Bell of Wake Forest, NC; sister in law, Elaine (Perry) Casteel. Her grandchildren: Shaun (Amanda) Mitzel, Geoff (Jenny) Bell, Dewey (Amy) Preast, III, Jenny (Jimmy) Wu-Fish, Chris (Becca) Bell, June Preast, Joel Fish, Lucas Fish and twelve great grandchildren!
