IN LOVING MEMORY OF
June
Lacroix
June 3, 1927 – February 18, 2016
RAPID CITY-June Margaret LaCroix raced off into the sunset on Thursday, February 18 th , 2016. June was born on June 3 rd , 1927 in Randolph, NE to Vincent (Bake) and Amanda Havorka. She grew up in Randolph, NE and after graduating from high school she continued her education in California.
June returned home to Randolph where she met Roland Damien (Bus) LaCroix. They were wed on September 22 nd , 1949 and enjoyed 33 years together before Bus passed in 1982.
In 1952, their first child, Jill, was born. In 1954 a son Jack was born, and another son, Todd, followed in 1958. During their childhood, June devoted herself to raising her children and providing a wonderful home for the entire family. During these years, she also taught swimming for the American Red Cross at Sioux Park and Roosevelt pools, and managed the Alibi bar, which was purchased by her father-in-law, Lou (Pepe) LaCroix, and Bus.
Following the flood of 1972, June decided that she wanted to rebuild the existing small liquor store, Bus's Bottle Shop, and add on a bar. After several months of intensive planning, her dream came true, and the Time Out Lounge opened its doors. Never one to sit still, June added the Time Inn Motel in 2004.
June worked every day, from sunset to sundown at the Time Out. She ran her bar with a firm, but gentle hand, and came to be admired and respected by her patrons, often times going above and beyond to help them in times of need, giving them sound advice along the way.
June was very active in her community, being a member of the Rapid City Chamber of Commerce, the Black Hills Badlands and Lakes, South Dakota Retailers, Licensed Beverage Dealers of South Dakota, the Sturgis Rally, and numerous other charitable organizations.
One of June's passions were her quarter horses. She raised and raced all over the United States and Canada. In 2013 the South Dakota Horseman's Association honored her for her years of support with "The Friend of Horseman's Award". June was also a board member of Old West Racing Association and added a simulcast site in the Time Out Lounge. In her second year of operating the site, Time Out Downs was the home of the Breeder's Cup $2.6 winning ticket, earning the Time Out Lounge national fame.
June was always active in politics, locally and nationally. She loved hosting parties, and being involved in her community.
June is survived by her three children, Jill, Jack (Julie), Todd (Cindy), four grandchildren, Max, Kendra, Arie and Dylan, siblings Vince (Dee) Havorka and Barbara (Bob) Gartner, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bus, her parents, Bake and Amada, and a brother, Calvin Havorka.
We will not mourn her passing, but celebrate her life and hopefully continue to adhere to her guidance and sage advice.
