Obituary

Karen June Olsen passed away at the young age of 70 in Orem, Utah. She was born on November 28, 1942 in Pocatello, Idaho to June Jensen and Thomas Burke, the younger twin to her brother, Karl. She was adopted by Harold Davis, June's second husband, shortly before the small family moved to Salt Lake City, Utah. There, Karen grew up and spent her young years in activities in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Girl Scouts, school, taking piano lessons and enjoying her friends. Karen deeply loved her brothers and sisters and many times carried the responsibilities of the home on her shoulders. Karen was a beautiful young woman and had many friends. She and Karl attended the same grades together, and because school was easy for them, they breezed through classes at Wasatch Elementary, Bryant Junior High School and East High School. Upon her graduation from East High, she enrolled and attended Brigham Young University. While attending the University, she fell in love with Michael Jon Coffman. They married and moved to California where Karen went to work. While there, a son, Jon, was born. Karen sent pictures and announcements to her family and friends detailing Jon's arrival and their excitement for this new little one in their lives. Karen considered Jon her miracle child. Upon returning to Utah, Karen and Michael divorced, and Karen began work as a secretary at the University of Utah. Jon was cared for by his grandma June while Karen earned money to support herself and Jon. Karen worked hard and saved her money hoping to also return to BYU. Instead, she met, and eventually married, a student in Engineering at U of U, Lyle LaFramboise. When Lyle graduated, they made their way to South Dakota where Lyle opened up his engineering business called EAGLE 2000, and to help Native Americans. Supporting Lyle, Karen's talents flourished and she and Lyle, with Jon's help, gave undaunted support to the Dakota Sioux American Indians. They adopted and raised eleven beautiful healthy children and foster-cared for several others. While Lyle worked at his business, Karen started her own business. She made drapes for housing developments on Indian Reservations and many homes in the Pierre, SD area, including the Governor's mansion. Her hands never stopped working. She bottled food, kept a garden and raised bees, sewed clothes for their children and tried to keep their lives focused on health, happiness and looking forward to the blessings they so desired for their family and their many friends in the Dakotas. Karen seemed indomitable and clung tenaciously to her faith in Jesus Christ. Lyle struggled with serious allergies, which took his life in 1991. They had been married for 25 years. Following Lyle's death, Karen returned to BYU and finished the degree she had begun so many years earlier. After raising her children, getting her degree, and caring for her aged mother and father, Karen met and married Kent Olsen on January 12, 2002. During the ten wonderful years they spent together, Karen and Kent traveled often, visiting friends and family and served a Mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the New York Mission. Kent and his family dearly loved Karen and spent many hours caring for her when she became ill. Kent passed away on October 3, 2012. Karen is survived by five sons - Jon, Clifford, Brian, Casey, and Thomas, six daughters - Sarah, Benita, Eva, Emmaline, Janice, and Kaye Lynn, one foster daughter - Lynette, three step-sons - Kerry LaFramboise, Michael LaFramboise, Darren Olsen, four step-daughters - Jill Plummer, Tracy Smith, Michelle Bankhead, Kathy Holmes, Melanie Burr. She is also survived by two sisters, Kaye Shackelford and Rennei Coleman, one brother, Kenny Davis, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and numerous grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Karl, her husband Lyle and her husband Kent. Funeral services were at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 9, 2013 at the Pleasant View 9th Ward Chapel in Provo, Utah. Visitation in Rapid City will be on Thursday, November 14 from 5:00-7:00 pm at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home.
