Obituary

RAPID CITY - Karen L. Hegre, 68, of Rapid City, died in Yankton on Thursday, November 21, 2013. Karen Lee Reed was born May 31, 1945 in Mitchell, SD to Del and Alice [Woodward] Reed. She grew to adulthood in the Woonsocket, SD area and later moved to Pierre, SD and attended school. She then went into Radio and attended radio school in Chicago and later moved to Rapid City and worked for KIMM Radio writing copy and commercials. It was in 1970 at Rapid City where she and her son, Rich, met Doug. Karen and Douglas Hegre were married on November 11, 1972 at Mountainburg, Arkansas. They resided in Fayetteville, Arkansas for one year before returning to Rapid City where they made their home. Karen was active in Avon and was team leader and #1 in sales for two years in the District. She then went into TOPS where she was a District Leader and lost 101 pounds in one year. Karen then started two different shops in the home, Alice's Attic and BH Herbs & Aromatherapy. She then attended Master Gardener course and grew and harvested many of her own herbs. Her home and yard were also open to anyone and she was honored to be asked to show her yard in the Rapid City Garden Walk. Karen loved reading, writing, gardening and life in general. She also enjoyed helping anyone in need, natural wildlife, fishing also helped rehab different birds in her yard with her five ponds. Survivors include her husband, Douglas Hegre, a son, Richard (Pam) Hegre, Rapid City; one grandson, Matthew Hegre; a sister, Jackie Carson, Hay Springs, Neb.; a brother, Richard Reed, Alma, Ark. and numerous nieces and nephews. Karen was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters: Connie Lou Reed and Marilyn Mutter and 2 brothers, in law, Lyle Carson and Fred Mutter. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 27, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home with the Rev. Herb Cleveland officiating. Inurnment will follow at Pine Lawn Memorial Park, Rapid City.
