RAPID CITY – Kathryn Elaine Larson passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 20, 2023, at Avantara Arrowhead in the arms of her oldest daughter.  This wonderful, amazing, faithful servant of the Lord, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend lived for a remarkable 100 years, 2 weeks, and 2 days.

Kathryn was born at home on April 4, 1923, in Centerville, South Dakota to Cornelius and Mabel Johnson.  She was proud to say she was born one month prematurely and placed in a shoebox on the wood stove to keep warm then lived to be 100!  She and the family lived on the farm in Centerville, SD, and later moved to Hooker, SD where she graduated from grade school.  In 1943, she began "hooking" rides on the train to her job as a waitress at a café in Beresford and met the love of her life, Roger Paul Larson. They were married on June 24, 1944, and celebrated 75 years of marriage at the time of Roger's passing in 2020.

In 1955, Roger and Kathryn moved to Rapid City, SD, and settled down to raise their family. Kathryn worked at the sale barn as a bookkeeper and at The Alex Johnson as a banquet waitress in the ballroom.  She then became a homemaker, supporting Roger and the children.  Kathryn and Roger were founding members of the Atonement Lutheran Church and faith in God was always an important part of her life.  She was active in church circle, choir, prayer chain, and making lefse for the Annual Turkey Dinner at Atonement.  Kathryn also belonged to the Sons of Norway and volunteered at the Chapel in the Hills.  She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, Hardanger, and embroidery and attending numerous sports activities for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.  During her later years, Kathryn spent winters in Florence, AZ, with Roger and they traveled extensively to Montana, New Mexico, and Texas to visit family.

She is survived by her children, daughter, Mavis Dugan, of Rapid City, SD, and sons, Wayne (Sheri) of Houston, TX, and Gary (Kendra) Larson of Rapid City, SD. She also leaves behind eight grandchildren, Kelley Le Beaux, Vicki Le Beaux Hebb, Rod Cowling, Roxanne Cowling, Mike Cowling, Justin Larson, Nathan Larson, Lauren Larson Sheets; and eleven great-grandchildren as well as many other loving family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Paul Larson; daughter, Marlene, and her husband, David Cowling; son-in-law, Kenneth Dugan; grandsons, Stephen Larson, and Brian Le Beau. She was also preceded in death by her parents and 5 brothers.

Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home on Sunday, May 21, 2023.

Friends and family are invited to celebrate Kathryn's life on Monday, May 22, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at Atonement Lutheran Church with a luncheon to follow. A private family graveside service will be held at Mountain View Cemetery where she will be laid to rest alongside Roger.
