Rapid City - Kathryn Mae Rodruck Van Vlack, passed away peacefully October 15, 2014. She led an interesting, independent life. Kay was born in Waterloo, Iowa. She was the only child of Carl and Ann Rodruck. After nurses training at the Mayo clinic in Rochester, MN and in Chicago, Illinois she worked in a pediatric unit. Kay was stricken with polio in her twenties and spent a year in the university hospital in Iowa City. She talked of it as a difficult time, but she tried to make the best of the circumstances, she was determined to recover, and she did. She was even able to resume her nursing career. In the final years before retirement she worked in the office of several doctors in Mason City, Iowa. In her younger years, Kay enjoyed travel (she and good friends took several trips together) and entertaining. In her 70s Kay was reacquainted with widower Don Van Vlack (whom she had known in high school), they married and she joined his grown family. They traveled between family and friends while in good health and then settled in Rapid City. Kay was a sharp dresser and decorator. She was engaging in conversation, enjoyed making cards and watching sports (esp. football & basketball - she knew the teams, players, coaches). We are glad to have known this lovely lady, and thankful for her peaceful rest. Kay was preceded in death by her parents, and husband. She is survived by stepdaughters: Kris Sagrillo (Al) of Paradox, CO, Barb Hunt (Dennis) of Waterloo, IA, Pat Link (Steve) of Brooklyn, IA; stepsons John Van Vlack (Linda) and Tom Van Vlack (Sara) both of Rapid City, SD; 11 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. Private family services for Kay will be held at a later date. Funeral arrangements are being directed by Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home.
