Obituary

Kelly Eugene Abraham, 61, of Black Hawk, died peacefully on May 9th, 2024, with his family by his side.  Kelly was born in Wessington Springs, SD, on February 13, 1963, to Vernon and Della (Grabin) Abraham.

He spent his first 16 years in Wessington Springs.  From dawn till dusk, he was a whirlwind of activity, delivering newspapers, working at the grocery store, lifeguarding duties while also playing football and the saxophone in the marching band.  He fell in love riding and repairing anything with wheels.  His spare time was spent hunting, fishing, and going to car races with his parents and riding dirt bikes.  These years were made even more special by spending time with his grandparents at the Grabin family farm.  Here he enjoyed shooting flickertails, playing pitch, and spending time with his cousins.   It was here that he mastered the art of teasing from his grandfather, a skill that would become his trademark.  True to his adventurous spirit, Kelly often took his sister, Shelly, along for the ride.  His dirt bike escapades were the stuff of legend.

The family moved to Piedmont, SD, in 1979.  He graduated from Sturgis High School in 1981 where he almost missed his graduation because he was shooting pool and drinking beer with his buddies but he made it.  For the next few years Kelly spent time hanging out with friends, camping, riding motorcycles, and financing law enforcement departments through his countless tickets.  Kelly moved to Phoenix in the late 80s. After living like an 80s Rock Star, he called it quits and moved back to the Black Hills in 1992.

In 2003, Kelly took on a new title, uncle.  With his knack for witty banter and timeless pearls of wisdom, Kelly easily won the hearts of his nieces and nephews, becoming a much-loved character in their lives. His legacy will continue to shine brightly in their hearts.

Kelly had many jobs throughout his life including Happy Chef, Target, Ed's towing, and TMA which led to him co-owning ProMarine and Auto in Black Hawk with his lifelong friend Steve Finck. Kelly's reputation as a skilled mechanic was unmatched, but it was his unwavering commitment to honesty and reliability that truly set him apart. His dedication to his craft was a testament to his integrity, and his absence leaves a void in the community that will be deeply felt.

Throughout the twists and turns of Kelly's journey, one thing remained unwavering: his mother's steadfast presence. He found solace in knowing that she was always there, a dependable source of safety and comfort whenever he needed it.

Margaret and Kelly spent the last decade together riding, camping, kayaking, jeeping, and golfing with their good friends.

Kelly possessed a sense of humor that was truly one-of-a-kind. If you were fortunate enough to know him, no further explanation is needed. His zest for life was contagious, and his wisdom and laughter will be cherished forever. Reflect on the lessons he taught you and all the good times you shared.

Survived by his mother, Della Abraham (Summerset, SD); sisters, Shelly Steichen (Valdez, AK) and Roxy Abraham (Lakeville, MN); brother Jody (Chris) Abraham (Lakeville, MN), nephews and nieces Braxton, Aivry, and Cady Abraham and Jude and Novella Haneman; and significant other Margaret Battista.

Preceded in death by his father, Vernon Abraham; his grandparents Jay and Beulah Grabin and Vernon (Cy) and Mildred Abraham.
