Obituary

RAPID CITY- Kermit Curtis Torve, 88, passed away on Tuesday, November 25, 2013 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Kermit was born on a farm near Irene, SD, on October 12, 1925, to Oliver and Maggie Torve. He graduated from Viborg High School and was inducted into the U.S. Army at Ft. Snelling on March 29, 1945. Kermit graduated from South Dakota State in Agriculture and joined the Soil Conservation Service in Miles City, MT. He married Jean Olson on April 24, 1955 in Miles City, and then worked at the Production Credit Association and moved to Rapid City in the fall of 1959. He worked for PCA for 30 years, retiring in 1985. He was active in civic efforts, with a focus on youth sports. Baseball groups that he was involved with include the Basin League, American Legion Post 22, Little League and Pony League. After his boys graduated he continued working in the community with Midget Football, Legion baseball, RV clubs, the Officials, Calvary Lutheran Church and the Masonic Lodge of Hermosa. Survivors include his wife, Jean, Rapid City; two sons, Kelvin (Tonya) Torve, Davidson, NC; Kenton (Lisette) Torve, Loretto, MN; seven grandchildren, and friends Ole, Lena, & Sven. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Vilas and Lemoine and a sister Betty. Visitation will be from 6-7:30 p.m. on Friday, November 29, 2013 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home with a Masonic Ritual at 7:30 p.m. provided by the Battle River Masonic Lodge #92 of Hermosa. Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 30, 2013 at Calvary Lutheran Church with Rev. Herb B. Cleveland officiating. Interment will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, December 2, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with military honors provided by the Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and the South Dakota Army National Guard. In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be directed to a charity of the donor's choice.
