IN LOVING MEMORY OF
L. Harold
Carlin
July 27, 1918 – April 2, 2018
L. Harold Carlin passed away peacefully at home Monday, April 2, 2018 after a great life of 99 years. Harold was born on July 27, 1918 in Hettinger, ND to Peter and Mayme (Sheehy) Carlin, joining three older siblings. Growing up a "North Dakota farm boy," as he often referred to himself, prepared him well for his life ahead.
After graduating from Hettinger High School, Harold answered the call to duty by joining the Navy during WWII being stationed at the Naval Air Station in Corpus Christi, Texas and at Attu Naval Base in the Aleutian Islands. He served as a radio operator on several types of aircraft. One of his fondest memories was participating in the Honor Flight in 2010 to Washington DC that honored WWII veterans.
After leaving the service he attended business college in Minneapolis. He then moved to Rapid City to begin a long career in modular homes and real estate sales, and where he also met his bride-to-be, Rosalie Marie Magirl.
Harold and Rosalie were married Aug. 18, 1951 at the Immaculate Conception Church in Rapid City where they raised their family in love and faith. His Irish wit was always in abundance but especially during the annual St. Patrick's Day party that he and Rosalie hosted for thirty years.
Harold is survived by his children, Jim Carlin, Boise, Idaho, Kathy Cornelison, Jean Whalin, Susan (Steve) Massopust, Nancy (Bob) Sanders, Greg Carlin and Mary Jo Gould all of Rapid City. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Pat Weber and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Rosalie of 54 years; his parents; and sister Elizabeth Waldron; and brothers Joe and Lawrence Carlin.
Visitation will be 5:30 p.m to 7 p.m. Thursday April 5, with a Christian Wake Service at 7 p.m. at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home.
