Obituary

RAPID CITY | Larry Neil Amburn, 67, died Sunday, July 13, 2014, at his home. He was born Nov. 3, 1946, in Springfield, MN, to Leonard and Agnes (Baumann) Amburn. Larry graduated from Rapid City High School in 1964 and served six years in the U.S. Navy as a journeyman electrician. Larry married Patricia Heeren on June 1, 1974, in Rapid City. They initially lived in Rock Springs, WY, moving to Casper, WY, in 1976. Larry was an electrician for Automation Electronics while in Wyoming. They moved back to Rapid City in 1985, where Larry was employed as a Toxic Program Manager for the 28th Civil Engineer Squadron at Ellsworth Air Force Base. Larry was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, a lifetime member of the VFW and the Rapid City U.S. Bowling Congress. Larry was a valued coach of the Saturday morning kids bowling league, receiving many Coach of the Year awards. In 2011, he was inducted into the SD Hall of Fame for the USBC. Larry was an avid fisherman and loved taking his grandkids fishing. He also loved following the Minnesota Vikings and Twins. He was preceded in death by his father, Leonard Amburn; and his sister-in-law, Beverly Amburn. Larry is survived by his wife, Patricia "Patti" Amburn, Rapid City; his mother, Agnes Amburn, Rapid City; son, Bryan (Angela) Amburn, Dimondale, MI; daughter, Danielle Amburn, Rapid City; brothers, Gary Amburn, Atlanta, GA, and Dennis Amburn, Rapid City; sisters, Ann (Terry) O'Brien, Wheatland, CA, Carol (Larry) Monheim and Beverly (Jim) Sullivan, both of Rapid City; and five grandchildren, with the sixth expected in September. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., with 7 p.m. Christian Wake services Thursday, July 17 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Christian Funeral Mass will be offered at 11 a.m. Friday, July 18, at Blessed Sacrament Church, with Fr. Grant Gerlach presiding. Interment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with full military honors rendered by the Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and the U.S. Navy Honor Guard.
