Obituary

LaVerne Clare Stone, 89, passed away peacefully at her home on June 18, 2022. LaVerne is survived by her husband of 68 years, Harold Stone as well as one daughter, two sons, seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, brother Bill (Clarice McManus), sister-in-law Elaine Turner, and many nieces and nephews that all loved Aunt LaVerne (or Aunt Vernie).

LaVerne was born April 14, 1933, in Reliance, SD. As the daughter of Leo and Eleanor McManus, she joined sisters Donna and Patricia and brother Bill. She grew up in Huron, South Dakota and later moved to Rapid City, South Dakota while in high school.

LaVerne met Harold at Rapid City High. After graduating in 1951, LaVerne moved back home to Huron while Harold served for 2 years in the Korean War. They were married July 31, 1953. LaVerne and Harold moved to Boulder, CO for their first year of marriage. While in Boulder, their first son, John, was born though died at birth.

LaVerne and Harold lived in Rapid City for 67 of their married years.  Harold ran a family business, which she later helped with, after raising their three children: Greg (Bridget) Stone, Beth (Bob) Chalberg, Matthew (Kathy) Stone.  She had seven grandchildren: Zachary Stone, Cody Stone, Rory Stone, Ryan (Stephany) Chalberg, Erin (Lee) Chalberg Bauer, Megan Stone, and Daniel Stone. LaVerne had 5 great-grandchildren:  Isabella Stone, Berkley and Bryn Bauer, and Eleanor and Jude Chalberg.

LaVerne loved nothing more than taking care of her family. She loved them, listened to them, and continually worried about them.   She loved her children unconditionally, had a special place in her heart for each of her grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren brought the joy to her life that only children can do. Her home was a special place for many, whether it was for a holiday, a family celebration, or just a cup of tea with a friend. LaVerne had the gift of making anyone she was with feel loved, cared for, and special. She will be missed by many.

Her Memorial Mass will be held 11:00 am Thursday, June 23, 2022 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.

Burial of cremains will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD.
