Obituary

NEMO--Lenora Nelson, 90, of rural Nemo, died at a Rapid City nursing home on Thursday, October 15, 2009. Gladys Lenora Duren was born on June 8, 1919, in Nemo to Chester and Mamie (Assmann) Duren. She attended the Nemo School, graduated from Lead High School in 1937 and received her Teacher's Certificate from Black Hills Normal School in Spearfish. She later attained her Bachelor's Degree from Black Hills State College. After receiving her teacher's certificate, Lenora taught rural school in Pennington County, and Newell before beginning her long career in Deadwood. On December 28, 1946, Lenora was united in marriage to Norman Nelson in Rapid City and the couple lived in the Lead/Deadwood area. Lenora retired in the early 1980's after teaching in the Lead/Deadwood school system for nearly 40 years, mostly in the 2nd grade. After their retirement, Norman and Lenora moved to her family's home place near Nemo, where she lived until recently. Lenora was a member of the Nemo Community Church, enjoyed yardwork, gardening, reading and loved her cats. Survivors include her sister, Clara Schmitz, of rural Nemo. Among many nieces and nephews are a nephew, Terry Schmitz and his wife, Colleen, of rural Nemo; 2 great-nieces, Danielle Jones and her husband, Lenny, of Rapid City and Heather Hitterdal and her husband, Steve , of Sioux Falls and a great-great niece, Breanne. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Norman in 2004 and an infant sister. Visitation will be from 2 until 4 p.m. on Sunday at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home in Rapid City. Services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 19, at the Nemo Community Church with Rev. Nick Rombough officiating. Burial will follow in the Nemo Cemetery. Memorial gifts will be used for the Nemo Community Church and the Nemo Cemetery.
