Obituary

Leo Rawstern, 85 years old, passed away at his home on Wednesday, February 21st, 2024, with his family at his side after a 20 year battle with cancer.

Leo was born December 30, 1938, in Wolsey, South Dakota to Irwin and Clara (Langbehn) Rawstern.  He grew up in Wolsey, South Dakota, Edgemont, South Dakota, Midland, South Dakota, Onida, South Dakota, and Miller, South Dakota.

Leo graduated high school in 1958 from Miller South Dakota. After graduation, he chased the love of his life, JoAnne Keck, and they were married in 1961. His first son, Ricky Rawstern, was born in 1962. Seven years later in 1969, his second son, Keven Rawstern was born. Leo worked multiple jobs to take care of the family. He worked seven years for Pugh Electric where he became a journeyman electrician. He moved his family to Rapid City in the summer of 1978. He worked at Elcon Electric for two years. In 1980, his coworker, Bill Herbst, started MLH Electric, asking Leo to come to work for him. He worked for Bill until the time his wife JoAnne got sick in 2006. Leo took care of JoAnne until her passing in 2007.

Leo was an avid hunter and fisherman. Leo and JoAnne bought a camper and boat and parked it by the Missouri River. He spent almost every weekend of the summer for 30 years fishing and spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by two sons; Ricky Rawstern (Tina) of Rapid City, Keven Rawstern (Shannon) of Blooming Grove, New York; two grandsons: Colton Rawstern and Levi Rawstern of Rapid City;  brother Peanuts (Eldon) Rawstern of Miller, South Dakota; brothers-in-law: Kenny Stewart of Mobridge, South Dakota and Gary Keck of Apache Junction, Arizona; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his sister Benna Bee (Ken) Stewart, brother Wayne and sister-in-law Mary Rawstern, the love of his life, JoAnne Rawstern, and his parents Irwin and Clara Rawstern.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 pm Thursday February 29 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home with his Memorial Service at 11:00 am Friday at the funeral home.

Burial will be at about 12:00 pm noon at Pine Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

There will be a reception at The Park Restaurant in Baken Park after the burial.
