Rapid City – Leo K. Schartz, 94, died Tuesday, July 31, 2018 at the Clarkson Health Care Center.

Visitation will be from 10:00 am to 11:00 am Friday, August 3 with funeral service at 11:00 am at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1630 Rushmore Street. Burial will follow at Mt. View Cemetery.

Leo Kenneth Schartz was born February 5, 1924 in Hartford, SD to Katherine (Sutton) and Frank Schartz. He was married to Guriene Muchow on May 27, 1949 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hartford. They lived and farmed in the area until they moved to Sioux Falls where Leo started his welding, fabrication and maintenance career. The family also lived in Billings, MT and Rapid City where Leo worked until his retirement in 1988 from Air Products.

They have been members of Bethlehem Lutheran church since moving to Rapid City.

Leo enjoyed getting together with family and friends to go on camping trips, play cards and games, laugh and tell stories. He was an expert storyteller. Some of those stories involved cars and tractors and he could recall the details of every car he ever owned. Leo loved desserts of every kind, especially cookies, enjoyed the occasional Busch Light, but absolutely could not tolerate peas. He worked and played hard his entire life and was blessed with a large wonderful family who loved him very much.

Grateful to have shared his journey are his wife of 69 years-Guriene; his children: Linda (Dave) Mell of Bozeman, MT, Ken, Glenn and Keith (Andrea) Schartz of Rapid City, and Dennis (Cindy) Schartz of Gillette, WY, 13 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren; his brother: Joe Schartz of Humboldt, SD and his sister: Avis (Leo) Herdina of Rapid City. He is preceded in death by his parents and his siblings Jim, Edward, Mildred Sandgren and Greta Stone.
