Rapid City – Leonard James Novak, 84, Rapid City died Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at the Department of Veteran Affairs Medical Center-Ft. Meade.
Leonard was born October 6, 1931 at Lesterville, SD to Ernest and Lillian [Novotny] Novak. As a child he moved with his parents to Martin, SD where he attended grade school and Bennett County High School, where he graduated.
He served in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954 and was honorably discharged as a Corporal. He married Martha Yekal in 1953 and to this union six children were born: Kathy [Jim] Hornstra, Arleen [Mark] Willoughby, Marlene [Loren] Buchholz, John [Maureen] Novak, Gerald [Kristine] Novak and Thomas [Helen] Novak. In 2002 Leonard married Josephine Buchholz.
They owned and operated and worked at Novak's Specialties Meats in Hermosa, SD and then they moved to Rapid City where they managed the Black Hills Farmers Market for 15 years, retiring in the fall of 2015.
Surviving family members are his wife: Josephine Novak, all six children, 14 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren, one brother Edward Novak of Martin, SD and several nieces and nephews.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Monday, January 18 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home, 2700 Jackson Boulevard, with the Rosary recited at 7:00 pm.
Christian Funeral Mass will be 9:30 am Tuesday, January 19 at St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church, 221 Knollwood Drive, [next to Mother Butler Center] with Rev. Edward Witt, S.R. officiating.
Burial will be held at 11:30 am at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with full military honors.
