Obituary

RAPID CITY- Lester (Sonny) Doran left this earth on November 26, 2013, a life traced in the palm of his hand. From the tiny one that unfurled ninety years ago on a farm in Plankinton, SD, Sept. 5, 1923, to one that joined another's, his wife's, and held it through 70 years of wedded bliss. Hands that met WWII in 1943 and served in the 150th Infantry Regiment, U. S. Army, as a T/5, Tech Corporal, defending the Panama Canal Zone until 1946. When he returned to Chamberlain, SD, those hands built a life, held a family, worked for the Bureau of Mines, ran a café and spent 11 years on the road as a route salesman for the Metz Baking Co. Palms creased by oil, owning a Standard Oil station for 20 years. Hands spent in service, 15 years on the City Council, as Commander of the VFW and 35 years as the American Legion Sergeant of Arms. Moving to Rapid City in 1986, he resided here until his death. He is survived by his wife Gen, three children, Robert and his wife Corie, Diana and her husband Doug, and Dan and his wife Pam, eleven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. We will live with the memory of his hand, calloused by labor and softened by love. One never far from the remote control and a Western or slapping his knee after a salty joke. One that crafted with intention everything it touched from woodworking marvels to etched ornaments upon the tree. Hands that scattered feed for the turkeys and corn for the deer, that could coax morning glories out of darkness and smiling pansies from the earth. Hands that took hold of life with such zest and peacefully loosened their grasp when it was time to go. Husband, father, grandfather and friend, everything you touched transforms every life it touches. Knowing and loving you is the finest story of our lives, and we'll carry that narrative in our hearts and your hand in our own as we write each chapter anew. Memorial visitation will be from 3:00 to 4:00 on Monday, December 2, 2013 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home with a prayer service following at 4:00 p.m. with Pastor John Britt officiating with Military Honors provided by the Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and the South Dakota Army National Guard. Inurnment will be at a later date in Chamberlain.
