Obituary

RAPID CITY - On July 27, 2024, Dr. Lewis Norman Ferrier (Norm) crossed the victory line, passing away peacefully in the presence of his family. A life well lived, a race well won, Norm gave everything and enjoyed life immensely.

He is preceded by his father and mother Dr. Robert and Isabel Ferrier, his brothers Robert and Donald Ferrier. He is survived by his wife Diane and their sons, David, Scott and James Ferrier. Daughter-in-law Amanda Anderson and grandchildren Jack and Miles Ferrier. His sister Dorothy Harrison and her four children Pamela, Rebecca, Patrick and Matthew Harrison.

Born in Calgary Alberta Canada, Norm enjoyed playing football and hockey along with hobbies consisting of photography, geology and hiking.

Raised in a medical family, his father practiced family medicine while his brother and sister entered radiology. Norm pursued his medical degree and Masters in Biochemistry from the University of Calgary. He proceeded to complete an internship, three years of internal medicine at the Calgary General Hospital and a Cardiology fellowship at the University of Dalhousie in Halifax Nova Scotia.

In the spring of 1983 Norm met his future wife Diane Gossen at the Calgary General Hospital Intensive Care unit. They married on July 6, 1985, after completing their further studies in Halifax, Nova Scotia and Victoria, British Columbia, respectively. The two shared the rest of his life together, standing beside one another through all of life's obstacles, showing love for each other in countless ways while giving each other endless reasons to smile.

Norm and Diane began their life together in his hometown of Calgary before immigrating to the United States. His medical career brought them to Minot, ND. The two of them worked and raised their three boys in Minot before moving to Rapid City, SD in 1996. It was there that Norm practiced his love for medicine until his retirement in 2019 from the Monument Health Heart and Vascular Institute.

With a true calling, Norm was a remarkably passionate Cardiologist. Providing perpetual patient care in interventional cardiology, performing angioplasties, and addressing new medical challenges enriched him. Yet nothing surpassed the love he held for his family, where he dedicated most of his time outside his career. Throughout his life, Norm was fond of running, tennis, music, photography, gardening and so much more. With a hidden talent for whistling, he was never short of a tune.

Norm will be remembered for his love in Jesus Christ, acute optimism, cheerfulness, encouragement and a quick wit. We rejoice, knowing that he is whole again, complete in body, soul and spirit in heaven. He will remain forever in our hearts.

Norm's love of medicine and research led to his desire to donate his brain to assist in the search for an Alzheimer's cure.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the National Organization for Rare Disorders, Inc. NORD or the Rapid City Cornerstone Rescue Mission.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 6, 2024 at Westminster Church (1012 Soo San Drive, Rapid City SD 57702), with Reverend Bob Jacobs officiating.
