IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Lisa Ann
Batteen
October 20, 1964 – January 8, 2021
BOX ELDER, SD | Lisa Ann Batteen, 56, passed away suddenly on Jan. 8, 2021 in Rapid City. Lisa was born Oct. 20, 1964, to Lawrence "Dutch" and Noel (Early) Protsman in Lansing, IA.
Lisa graduated from Kee High School in 1982. She married Thomas Batteen in Lansing, IA on Nov.7, 1981. They welcomed their first son Tommy on March 8, 1982. Shortly after, they relocated to Box Elder, SD when Tom was stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base. Here they welcomed son Nathan on June 29, 1983 and daughter Leah on December 17, 1990.
Lisa began her career at Black Hills Works in 1989. Most recently Lisa was the Shared Living Program Coordinator. She enjoyed a long career with the agency, making numerous friends and touching the lives of the many people she supported. For her years of dedicated service, Lisa was inducted into the Black Hills Works Hall of Fame.
In 2015, Lisa was recognized nationally by the American Network of Community Options and Resources as the South Dakota Direct Support Professional of the Year. She and her husband traveled to Washington D.C. to receive the award. However, for Lisa it wasn't about the recognition; it was about the people. The people she supported brought her so much joy. Her passion for her work was evident to all who knew her, and her reputation extended much further than just those she came in contact with.
Outside of work, Lisa enjoyed going to activities her children and grandchildren were involved in, spending time with her extended and work family and traveling as she always looked forward to her next adventure! Lisa was well-known as a great story teller, had a sense of humor, and often colorful language. Lisa will be missed by family, friends, co-workers and the countless people she supported.
Lisa is survived by her husband Tom of Box Elder; her three children Tommy, of San Antonio, TX, Nathan (Megan), of Rapid City and Leah (Jake Hitesman), of Spearfish; her three grandchildren, Brayden, Parker and Lilyana; her mother, Noel and her brother, David of Lansing, IA; as well as many other extended family members.
She was preceded in death by her father and oldest brother Stephen Protsman.
