Obituary

Lloyd M. Morris, age 92, Piedmont SD died August 4, 2014. He was born August 18, 1921 at Blue Springs, NE to Velmer and Emma Morris. He attended school at Beatrice, NE and graduated in 1939. He was a trumpet player at 15 years of age and played in several dance bands while going to school. He spent 4 years in the Navy during WWII, serving on the light cruiser, the U.S. S. Birmingham. Aboard ship he was in the navigation division where he spent his time correcting charts and steering the ship. His ship was involved in 5 major battles. Following the service he took up watchmaking, jewelry repair and studied to be a Gemologist. He bought his first jewelry store in 1947 in Wymore, NE. For 27 years he also worked for a New York company as a diamond salesman. After moving to Rapid City, he and his wife of 24 years, Gerry, opened and ran jewelry stores in Chadron NE, Lead SD, and Love's Jewelry, The Diamond Corner and Krall's China and Crystal in Rapid City. After retiring, he became the President and CEO of Rushmore Gold Company. Along with his brother, Don and nephew Steve Morris, he started Dakota Creations, a Black Hills Gold company. Lloyd was an avid hunter and fisherman who held a hunting camp in the Black Hills for friends for many years. His friends remember him as having a great sense of humor. When he was a traveling salesman, he always entered the stores in July singing "Jingle Bells." Lloyd was a great storyteller and had entertaining stories about people he had met and the places he had been. He was a member of the Lutheran Church, VFW Post 1273, American Legion Post 22 and and Life-member of the Elks Lodge. He was Past President of a Nebraska, South Dakota and Kansas Salesman Organization. Surivors include his wife Barbara, son Gary Morris, of Rapid City and a daughter Kay Norden, of Parker, CO, both from previous marriages; 3 grandchildren, Nikki Morris, of Rapid City, Brad Norden, of Parker, CO and Brett Norden, of Columbia, MO and 6 great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be at 1:00 pm on Thursday, Aug. 7, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home with the Rev. Herb Cleveland officiating. Visitation and viewing with the family present will be from 12 Noon until 1:00 pm prior to the service. Burial, with military honors, will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Humane Society of the Black Hills.
