Lloyd Walter Rypkema passed away Monday, Sept. 27, 2010 at the age of 92. Lloyd was a well-known area businessman, rancher and community servant. He was born on August 1, 1918 on a farm between Linton and Westfield, ND. As a young teenager, Lloyd worked in the Ridgeview, SD area, initially breaking horses for local ranchers. His payment was in livestock which provided the opportunity to develop his own herds. At that time, Lloyd developed the partner and friendship with Albert Lopez/Hunt families which has continued through four generations. He worked in the mines in Nevada before moving to Deadwood to work with his brother, Eddie, in the tire business. He proudly served in the navy during WWII in Guam, where he was the ranking Petty officer in charge of the tire recapping unit for the planes in the Pacific. He married Ruth Arant, March 8, 1940 in Deadwood. After her passing, Lloyd married Ardath Driscoll Roney on Jan. 17, 1953. Lloyd was involved in several local businesses. He owned and operated Eddies Tire and Glass in Rapid City from 1946 until the 1972 flood. He was on the Board of Directors of Perpetual Savings & Loan. He and Ardath owned and operated Omaha Realty, which handled both commercial and residential properties. He served two terms on the Rapid City School Board and presented diplomas to three of his five children. He was instrumental in the passing of the school bond issue for Stevens High School. He also served three terms as Pennington Count Commissioner and 12 + years on the Pennington County Fair Board. He was a life member of the Elks, the Shriners and a Mason for over 60 years. Lloyd also enjoyed the Buckaroos and Custer Trail Rides. Lloyds most cherished memories revolved around his family, his brothers and sisters and his western life, raising quarter horses and Hereford cattle. He especially enjoyed the overseas trips he and Ardath took with the SD Stockgrowers. His family is grateful for the support he gave and the model his life has been. He liked to try new things, gave his best effort and made the most of life. He tried to make the world better by helping others. (Thanks for making it better for us, Dad.) Lloyd was preceded in death by his father, Martin Rypkema, mothers, Lena Rypkema and Ruth Rypkema , mothers in law, Millie Arant and Grace Driscoll, wives, Ruth and Ardath, first sister Bertha, brothers Arlo, Harold, Eddie, Milo and grandson, Lee Kary. He is remembered by his children, Donna (Ken) Kary, Mary (Don) Hoffman, Donovan (Geri) Rypkema, Marvin (Yvonne) Rypkema and Beth Rypkema. He is also survived by sisters, Hilda Smith and Bertha Scott, 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and many friends. Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 Thursday, Sept. 30, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home with a Masonic service at 7:00. Services will be at 1:30 P.M. Friday, Oct. 1, 2010 at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Doug Diehl and Rev. Don Hoffman officiating. Private family burial with Military Honors by Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and the South Dakota National Guard will be at Mountain View Cemetery. Please note the change of location for the service. Memorials have been established for Black Hills Childrens Home and the Central States Fair Foundation and the Ardath D Rypkema Education Trust at the Dahl Fine Arts Center.
