Obituary

RAPID CITY Lloyd J. Smith, 75, Rapid City, died Saturday, October 8, 2011 at Rapid City Regional Hospital after a short illness. Lloyd was born in McCook, NE on April 11, 1936, to Howard and Wilma Smith and as a young man; he proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. After his service, he returned to his home in Denver, CO and worked for a pharmaceutical company and there he met and later married Betty Joy. In 1968, Lloyd and his family were transferred to Rapid City. In 1975, he began his second career with the Prudential Insurance Company where he retired after 23 years. He and Betty spent several years traveling the United States and abroad until Betty passed away in 2004. Lloyd was an active member of the Cathedral Parish and the Knights of Columbus, the Meals Program and the Pennington County Sheriffs Department. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends having picnics in the Black Hills, laughing and teasing his coffee buddies and sharing special times with Joyce. Survivors include a son, Michael Smith, Rapid City, two daughters, Jeanne C. [Kevin] Schoepf, Edgemont and Kathleen Kat Stark, Rapid City; two grandchildren, Charles Schoepf, Viborg, SD and Jennifer Schoepf, Rapid City, one great granddaughter Sophia Schoepf, Sioux Falls, SD; two brothers, his twin brother Floyd [Jane] Smith, Cheyenne, WY and James [Oretta] Smith, Denver, CO; two sisters, LaDonna Readwin, Tacoma, WA and Virginia [Don] Morgan, Gambrills, MD. Visitation will be from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, October 14, at Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, followed by a wake and rosary service at 8 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, October 15, at the Cathedral, with the Rev. Michel Mulloy officiating. Burial with military honors will be Monday, October 17, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. He was preceded in death by his wife Betty J. Smith and son-in-law Mike Stark.
