Obituary

Lois J. Bakewell, 89, a native of Presho, passed away peacefully on Aug. 29, 2009 in Fountain Hills, AZ. Lois was the daughter of Robert Glen and Selma Annetta (Moe) Andis of Presho. Lois was the older sister of Ruth Laughtland and the younger sister of Clark Andis. Both siblings preceded her in death. After spending her early years in Presho and graduating from Presho High School, Lois attended General Beadle State College and the University of South Dakota in Vermillion graduating with a BA in education. She married Robert C. Bakewell in 1941 in Brookings. Following her husbands distinguished service in the U S Army in WW II, they moved to Custer where Bob started his law practice. Lois taught school and was her husband's legal secretary for 25 years. Lois participated in numerous civic associations during the years in Custer and the surrounding Black Hills. In 1972 she was Worthy Grand Matron of SD Eastern Star. In 1976, Lois and Bob retired to Palm Springs, CA. Lois continued her membership in the Palm Desert Community Church, Daughters of the American Revolution, Geneology, and PEO. Her book on family history, Andis-Moe Ancestors in America 1741 - 1990 was written and published during this time. After her husband's death, Lois moved to Fountain Hills, AZ to be closer to family. She remained active locally in the community and enjoyed family, friends and good health for several years. Survivors are her sister-in-law, Mrs. Shirley (Richard) Wilson, Salem, OR; nephews and nieces, Clark (Diane) Andis, Hartsel, CO; James (Susan) Laughtland, Scottsdale, AZ; Sharon Andis, Sublimity, OR; Vicki (Vernon) Suhn, Eureka, KS; Virginia (Stephen) Butcher, Fountain Hills, AZ and Lois (Mac) Meyer, Rapid City. Other survivors include 12 grand nephews and nieces and other relatives and lifelong friends. Visitation was held Monday, August 31, at Messinger Mortuary Fountain Hills, AZ. Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 4, 2009 at 1:00 P.M. with a visitation one hour prior to the services at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home in Rapid City with Rev. Bob Jacobs officiating. Burial will be in Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. Memorial donations are suggested to Shriner's Children's Hospital, 2025 E.
