Lois J. "Grammy" Vaughn, 90, passed away Friday, August 17, 2012 at Westhills Village Health Care Facility. Lois was born on September 5, 1921 in Vancouver, Washington, to Archie and Daisy (Rittgers) Koplin, the youngest of seven children. After her mother's death when Lois was eleven, she lived with her sisters, Meretta and Helen, while she finished grade school and high school. She was the only one of her family to graduate from high school. Lois met Joseph M. Vaughn at a Co-Op dance, and they later eloped to Medford, OR on September 26, 1940. They were living in Portland, OR when their daughter, JoAnn, and son, Jerry, were born. The family moved to a ranch near Capitol, MT in March 1951. In November 1951 the family moved to Rapid City, SD. With Joe's encouragement, Lois graduated with a degree in education from Black Hills State in 1963. She taught second grade at Robbinsdale School, and taught art, reading, and literature at Central High School until she retired in 1986. Her favorite pastimes were reading, sewing, crafts, and being what she called a "professional volunteer". She served on the SDSM&T United Campus Ministry's Board and Forum Committee. She was a president of DOES, BPO Elks. She served as guardian to Bethel #5 of International Order of Jobs Daughters. She was a Deaconess and Vice-Moderator at First Congregational Church. She was president of the Women's Fellowship and secretary of the Church Board. Lois was named to Who's Who Among American Colleges and Universities and served as local and state president of Alpha Delta Kappa. She was president of Black Hills Retired Teachers and received the Florence Krieger Award. Lois has served as president of the Black Hills Area Habitat For Humanity Affiliate. In 1999 the Rapid City Branch of American Association of University Women honored Lois by giving to the Educational Foundation Program a Named Gift hereafter known as the Lois Vaughn Fellowship Gift. Happy to have shared her life are her son, Jerry (Patty) Vaughn, Pactola, SD; granddaughters Susan (Mike) Yost, Idaho Falls, ID, and Pam Knoll, Bismarck, ND; grandsons John (Donna) Hobart III, Gillette, WY; Matt Hobart, Idaho Falls, ID; David (Terri) Vaughn and Kevin (Ann) Vaughn, Pactola, SD; Ryan (Courtney) Vaughn, Bentonville, AR; and eleven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, siblings, and daughter. A Visitation Reception will be held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Services will be at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 22, at First Congregational Church, with Rev. Kathleen Batchelder officiating. Private burial will be held at Rosehill Cemetery in Spearfish. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to First Congregational Church, Sanford Children's Hospital PICU (in honor of her great-grandson Daniel Vaughn) or memorial of your choice.
