Lonald R. Meister, affectionately known as Lonnie or Lon, of Rapid City, South Dakota, passed away on January 15, 2026, at the age of 72.
Lon was an excellent mechanic who could fix just about anything. When fixing things, Lon was known to complain a bit—a trait that became part of his reputation. Gruff by nature, he never hesitated to let people know what he thought. Despite his grumpy demeanor, Lonnie had many friends who sought his advice and genuinely enjoyed spending time with him.
An extraordinary fisherman and true lover of the outdoors, Lon found peace in nature. His biggest catch was a 54-pound salmon, landed while canoeing down Campbell Creek in Alaska. Despite not having a fishing pole with him, Lon still managed to land the biggest fish of his life. Let’s just say—an oar can be used for more than just paddling. He also loved panning for gold and garnets, spending countless hours exploring the land and water he cherished.
Lon shared a special bond with his mother, LaVene Odom, and the two were traveling partners, visiting many places together in their motorhome. Those journeys were among his most treasured memories.
He also shared his life with his beloved dog, Tony the Wonder Dog. Lon even taught Tony how to fish—something that amazed everyone who witnessed it. Tony would watch the line closely, and when a fish was on, he would rush toward the water, trying to retrieve the catch himself. Remarkably, that dog really did fish.
Lonnie was preceded in death by his mother, LaVene Odom, his best friend of 65 years, Rob Conway and his father, Frank Meister.
He is survived by his brother, Nick Meister; sister, Rendy Wise (Morgan); sister, Tedye Carlson (Ron); brother, Brock Odom (Anne-Marie); his son, Courtney Bostdorff; and a very special niece, Sheleen Hudelson (Robert). He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, whom he greatly enjoyed visiting with and spending time around.
Services will be held at Osheim & Schmidt, 2700 Jackson Blvd., Rapid City, SD 57702. February 16th at 2:00 p.m. Cards can be sent to Osheim & Schmidt.
Lonnie will be remembered for his mechanical skill, love of the outdoors, blunt honesty, unforgettable stories, and the friendships that enriched his life. His legacy lives on in the memories he created, the things he fixed, and the people—and animals—who were lucky enough to know him.
