IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Lorraine Edna
Hight
July 31, 1926 – March 4, 2025
Lorraine Edna Hight passed away Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at her home in North Rapid City following a brief illness.
Lorraine was born on July 31st, 1926, in Rapid City, SD to parents Frank and Lillian Clark. She was the youngest of three children in the family with brother John and sister Hazel. Her family moved to Kadoka, SD, while Lorraine was young, and the family lived in the railroad depot since her father was the Depot Agent. Lorraine attended schools in Belvidere and Kadoka and played trumpet in the school's band. She, and a few of her bandmates, would often play big-band style music at community dances and other social events. Lorraine loved playing the trumpet and big-band swing music. She graduated from Kadoka High School in 1944. The following year Lorraine attended Business College in Rapid City. She would ride on the train to Rapid City on Sunday and walk to her boarding room. She attended classes throughout the week and then returned home on Friday for the weekend.
Lorraine began her career working in Rapid City at the Farm Home Administration. Two years later she began working at the Social Security Administration as a Service Representative. She remained with the Social Security Administration for twenty-eight more years and retired in 1984. Working with the public for 30 years created many lasting "memories". Lorraine enjoyed recalling the time the Rapid City branch office was informed that an extremely agitated gentleman may be showing up at their office. Lorraine's desk was the closest to the front door and her managers slid her desk even closer to the door while telling her not to worry and assuring her that they "had her back."
Lorraine and Robert L. Hight were married on September 1st, 1952, in White River, SD, by Father Boat. They had five sons, Robert (Wen Jun), Michael, Mark, Paul (Deborah), and Pat (Amy). Lorraine was blessed with thirteen grandchildren, Mike, Melissa, Lilli, Joe (Adrianna), Kelly, Tim, Derek (Jena), Hollie, Paul Jr., Sarah (Patrick), Stephanie (Devon), Summer (Kassidy), and James. Lorraine had ten great-grandchildren, Alexander, Liam, Nelson, Larson, Callahan, Holden, Lincoln, Bennett, Ellery, and Ophilia.
Lorraine was a member of the local St. Johns and St. Therese the Little Flower Catholic Church for more than 70-years. She enjoyed working in her yard and tending to her flower garden and rose bushes. Lorraine was proceeded in death by brother John, sister Hazel, sons Michael and Mark, and granddaughter Kelly. She will be sorely missed, especially by those fortunate enough to have known her as Mom, Grandma, and Friend. Rest in peace.
