Loryn Jay Coates, 81, passed away peacefully at Avantara Mountain View in Rapid City on Monday, December 4, 2023.

Loryn was born on February 24, 1942 in Valentine, Nebraska.  He settled in Rapid City where he worked as a school crossing guard.  He was well thought of by the students and parents he helped safely get to school.   Later, he worked for Assurant where he served as a parking security guard for over 20 years.  He was well liked by his co-workers and developed many friendships during his time there.

Loryn enjoyed spending time outdoors and in the garden.  He had also been a previous member of the Moose Lodge in Gillette, WY.

Though he was a man of few words, when he spoke, people listened.  Ultimately he will be remembered as a kind man, sometimes a jokester, but always having a big heart.

Friends are invited to a memorial service at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 12, 2023 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home.
