Obituary

Lowell D. Hamilton, 80, Rapid City, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 8, 2009 at Rapid City Regional Hospital Hospice House with Adeline, his loving wife of 60 years was at his side. Lowell was born in Chamberlain, South Dakota to Ray and Laura Hamilton on January 8, 1929. Born and . raised in Chamberlain, Lowell shot his first goose when he was 12 years old. If there was something to hunt, Lowell was there. After two years in the Army, serving in Manila, he returned and married his childhood sweetheart, Adeline Cora Westre of Pukwana, SD in 1948. They moved to Rapid City and have been residents to this day. Lowell attended The School of Mines 1948 1953 in chemical engineering. He also was a deputy sheriff and a resident engineer for the U.S. Bureau of Standards from 1952-1969. He started as an investment executive broker on the New York Stock Exchange for Piper, Jaffray & Hopwood in Rapid City in 1969 until his retirement in 1997. Lowell was an enthusiastic hunter and fisherman. He was a private pilot (and his wife also) for 30 years. He also is listed with the American Power Boat Association as a SD 135 Cubic Inch Hydroplane Champion in 1958. In 1950 Lowell and Clark Besancon, and Bill Tift started the Propbusters Club, a group dedicated to flying and building model and radio-controlled airplanes. . For the past 20 years, Lowell and Adeline participated in the International Coors Schuetzenfest Rifle and Pistol events. Lowell won the National Pistol 200 Yard Event in Denver from 1991-1999. Lowell was involved in service organizations such as The Elks and The Lion Clubs since 1960, Isaac Walton for 30 years and as a Mason and Shriner for 50 years. His son, Robert Force, preceded him in death in 2005. Survivors include his wife, Adeline Hamilton, Rapid City, two daughters; Patricia (Ron) Balsamo, Scottsdale, AZ and Twila (Hunter) Scales, Austin, TX. Visitation will be 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. Thursday March 12, 2009 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Services will be 1:00 P.M. Friday, March 13, 2009 at Calvary Lutheran Church with Rev. Dwight Stensgaard officiating. Burial will be with military honors by Rushmore VFW Post 1273 at Black Hills National Cemetery. A memorial has been established to Rapid City Regional Auxiliary Hospice House.
