Obituary

RAPID CITY - Loyal Don Rau was born Feb. 13, 1954, in Rapid City, to Marvin and Bernice Rau, and died Sept. 4, 2010, in Yankton. Loyal lived in Redfield from 1957-1982, where he enjoyed frequent visits and outings with his family. How hard it was for his parents to place him there, but the doctor's orders took the decision from their hands. In 1982 Loyalbecame a client of Black Hills Workshop, where he lived and worked until January of 2010 when he became a resident of Golden Hills Living Center, where he could be found roaming the halls in his wheelchair, waving and smiling to all he passed. Loyal brought such joy to those around him and especially to his mother and father, who loved him dearly, and brother, who has many great memories of happy times with him growing up. Loyal loved the staff and his friends from the Workshop where he was very active up until the last year of his life. He was known for his warm smile, friendly handshake, and enthusiastic hug (depending on your gender). Loyal was very meticulous in getting the job done right, whether it was vacuuming at the Workshop, cleaning his room, or washing his clothes! His world turned into one of confusion and frustration when his parents passed away and he couldn't understand why the staff couldn't take him home to see mommy and daddy anymore. He is survived by his godparents,Loyal and Ida Mae Kolbrek of Sioux Falls; his brother, John Rau (Joan) of Tucson, Ariz.; nephews, Brian, Collin and Dana; niece, Angie; aunt, Dorothy Barnett of Highmore; uncle, Morris Rau of Rapid City; numerous cousins -a very special one being Terri Main of Keystone; and his sister-in-law and guardian, Vesper Wright of Rapid City. He was preceded in death by his sister, Connie Jo; his parents; and his grandparents. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10, at Osheim and Schmidt Funeral Home, with the Rev. Doug Diehl officiating. Visitation will be one hour before services. Burial will be at Mountain View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the Black Hills Workshop who took such good care of him over the years. A special thank you toNurse Karen and Nurse Amanda at the Human Services Centerin Yankton for their warmth and caring in Loyal's final week of life, and all the medical staff at Rapid City Regional Hospital who cared for Loyal during his final illness. You are all God's angels here on earth!
