Obituary

RAPID CITY Lyle Harold Butzke, 86, died peacefully in his residence, Thursday Jan. 22. He was born May 21, 1922, in Dallas, SD. He grew up in the small farm community of Dallas. After attending Southern State Normal in Springfield, SD, he taught country school for two years before joining the Marine Corp in 1944. On September 26, 1942, He married his true love, Jean Muriel Smith in Valentine, NE. They were married for 64 years when Jean passed in Dec of 2006. In 1952, the couple moved to Rapid City where Lyle worked for Building Material Distributors (Knecht Lumber) until his retirement in 1987. He was a member of First Congregational Church. For many years he was active in Sertoma and the Elks Lodge. He was a mainstay in the Elks bowling league. He took great pleasure in his family, friends, church and especially his grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by his survivors, who include his two sons, Roland Butzke, Dana Point, CA and Robert Butzke and wife Carol, Missouri City, Texas, a daughter, Susan Weiss and her husband Fritz, Rapid City, 9 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., Tuesday, January 27th at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 28th, at the First Congregational Church with Rev. Ted Huffman officiating. Interment will be at the Black Hills National Cemetery with military honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post 1273.
