IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Lyle Edward
Hendrickson
December 6, 1933 – January 23, 2017
RAPID CITY | Lyle E. Hendrickson, 83, died Monday, Jan. 23, 2017, at home.
Lyle was born on Dec. 6, 1933, in Montevideo, MN, to Harold and Alma (Stensrud) Hendrickson. He was raised on the family farm and graduated from Montevideo High School in 1951.
On Dec. 29, 1953, he married Barbara Huseby in Clara City, MN. Lyle worked on the farm until he was drafted in 1954 and was honorably discharged from the United States Army in 1955.
Lyle trained as a "field engineer" for the National Cash Register Company in Dayton, OH, beginning his career in Minneapolis. He was transferred to Rapid City in 1965, retiring in 1992 at 58.
Lyle was very much into sports and very competitive, especially when it came to golf, his passion, as his trophies attest. He was the first president of the Canyon Lake Little League and served as president of the American Legion Post 22 Parents Association. Lyle was a 53-year member of the Elks Lodge and also a member of the Knights of Columbus. Lyle especially liked being the "pancake flipper" at the KC breakfasts. Lyle and Barbara made a "deal" — if she took golf lessons he would take dance lessons. He made sure she knew he danced better than she played golf!
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Barbara: his children, Jim (Teresa) Hendrickson, Brownsburg, IN, Bob (Polly) Hendrickson, Chandler, AZ, and Pam (David) Smith, San Antonio, TX; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Lyle Nevins, Dawson, MN, and Phyllis Stevens, Thousand Oaks, CA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Donna.
Visitation begins at 5 p.m., with Christian Wake services at 6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 29, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
A Christian Funeral Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 30, at the church, with Fr. Brian Lane presiding. Interment, with military honors will be at 1:30 p.m. at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
A memorial has been established by the family.
