RAPID CITY- Lyle W. Fischer, 87, died Monday, October 15, 2012 at Fountain Springs Health Care. Lyle was born July 25, 1925 in Scranton, North Dakota to William and Betsy (Njos) Fischer. His first two years of life was spent on a sheep herder's wagon with his family. Lyle's dad died when he was just 11 years old and he had to quit school to help out on the ranch. Everyone in the Njos family stepped in to help out and raise him and his sister. In the mid 30's Lyle, his sister Shirley, and his mother moved to Rapid City. On August 28, 1944, Lyle enlisted into the U.S. Army. He worked as a gunner and machinist. He was honorably discharged on December 20, 1945. He met Frances Washburn in 1946 on the way to a barn dance. He married Frances on July 15, 1946 in Rapid City. To this union they had five children: Alan, Robin, Rhonda, Mark, and Julieanne. Lyle went to trade school and became a mechanic so he could provide for his family. He worked at Automotive Parts & Supply for over 25 years. He was an active member at Calvary Lutheran Church and was a life-member of the Rushmore VFW Post 1273. Every Thursday night for many years he would meet his friend, Leo for a beer and steak and on Saturday nights he and Frances would go dancing. Frances also enjoyed playing piano and Lyle would join her on the banjo. Lyle enjoyed all things outdoors. He loved the lake where he was known for "night fishing. His children remember him being able to find the shore no matter where he was. He also loved hunting and camping. He also loved his shop. He spent many hours in his garage which the family help build. He and Frances owned a craft store called the Mouse House, which they started at their home and eventually moved to Jackson Boulevard. Lyle did the woodwork and would refinish many things while Frances did the crafts. They both were very talented. Lyle will be remembered for being a quiet but funny man. He enjoyed life and his family very much. He was a loving husband, father, brother, and friend. Survivors include three sons, Mark (Terri) Fischer, Rapid City, Alan (Linda) Fischer, Powell, Wyo.; and Robin (Karyl) Fischer, Dallas, Texas; daughter, Julieanne (Bruce) Reuer, Denver; nine grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; sister, Shirley Kirkwood, Fountain Valley, CA; and brother in law, Frank Washburn, Rapid City. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Frances in May 2012; daughter, Rhonda Fischer in October 2001; and granddaughter, Tami Fischer Brech in May 2004. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday October 18, 2012 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, October 19, at Calvary Lutheran Church with the Rev. Herb B. Cleveland officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with Military Honors provided by the Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and the South Dakota National Guard. A memorial has been established at the Cornerstone Rescue Mission and the Disabled Veterans of America. We are also very grateful for the dedicated and loyal staff at Fountain Spring Heath Care Facility that took care of Father.
