CUSTER- (Myrtle) Jane Krogstad Olson (M. Jane Olson) was called to her heavenly home on Wednesday, June 27th 2012. Jane was born January 7th 1925 on the family farm near Rindal, Minnesota. She was the eldest of 7 siblings. After high school, Jane graduated from St. Cloud Teacher's College in 1945. She began her teaching career in Verndale, Minnesota. She moved to Thompson Falls, MT. After teaching for several years, Jane wondered if there was something more to life than teaching. She and a friend moved to Colorado Springs, CO where she worked for the local newspaper. She soon realized teaching was her passion. After her father died, Jane moved back to the family farm in Minnesota to help raise her youger siblings. She taught in both Fertile and Fauston, MN. Longing for mountains and pine trees, Jane wrote to the Custer school district inquiring about teaching opportunities. The Custer superintendent met her in Fargo for an interview and she was hired on the spot. Jane moved to Custer in 1959 where she taught for 32 years retiring in 1991. After retirement Jane continued to teach at Outlaw Ranch for Lutheran's Outdoors. She also taught confirmation at Custer Lutheran Fellowship and volunteered at the food pantry. Jane was a founding member of Custer Lutheran Fellowship where she served in many capacities. Soon after arriving in Custer Jane met the love of her life, Douglas Olson. They were married on December 27th 1960. Jane and Doug had 4 children. Sadly, Doug passed away in 1969. Jane is survived by her children, Brian (John Rother) Olson of Minneapolis, MN, Karen (Steave) Barness of Colorado Springs, CO, Scott (Diane) Olson of Custer, and Kevin Olson of Tucson, AZ. Sister June Young of Fertile, MN, brothers Jim (Katy) Krogstad of Fertile, MN and Terrance (Jean) Krogstad of Boise, ID, grandchildren, Miranda and Caden Barness, Chelsey, Krista, Sonja, and Logan Olson and great granddaughter, Rylee Blackwell. She was preceeded in death by her parents, her husband, brother Russell Krogstad, two sisters, Pearl Erickson and Fran Holmstrom, and an infant granddaughter, Faith Barness. Visitation will be held Friday, June 29th from 6 - 8 p.m. at Custer Lutheran Fellowship. Services will be held Saturday, June 30th at 10:00 a.m. at Custer Lutheran Fellowship with the Rev. Philip Lewison officiating. Interment will be at 9:30 am, Monday, July 2, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. Written condolences may be sent to 1119 Pine Street, Custer, SD 57730.
