Obituary

RAPID CITY - Marcelline J. Goggin, 73, passed away on April 9, 2012. Marcy was born in 1938 to Marcus Comes and Lotta Cahoon, the fifth of seven children, in Belle Fourche, South Dakota. She graduated from Spearfish High School in 1956 and received her B.S. degree in Elementary Education from Black Hills State College in 1961. Soon after graduation she left South Dakota to pursue her teaching career, first in Wyoming and then moving to California. A mutual friend introduced her to her future husband, Michael Goggin. Marcy and Mike were married on February 4, 1967 at St. John's Cathedral in Fresno, California and began their lives together in Oakhurst, California. Soon after they were transferred to a remote Forest Service station in the High Sierra that lacked many of the amenities we take for granted, such as electricity and phone. This was the beginning of a wonderful adventure that lasted 45 years. Because of Mike's career with the USDA Forest Service, Marcy found herself moving quite often, around 13 times. These moves included remote areas as well as big cities throughout the United States. Marcy was a wonderful mother and inspiration to her two daughters, Kathleen and Nadine, and was especially proud of their accomplishments. She very much enjoyed being a wife and mother. After her daughters moved away to begin college, she began to work for the Forest Service until she and Mike retired in January, 1997. Mike and Marcy enjoyed an active retirement, traveling the country as "full-time" RVers looking for that perfect place to settle. That turned out to be the Black Hills where they settled into a beautiful log home that they built together. She spent much cherished time with family and friends and loved to entertain. She dearly loved her 3 grandchildren. Marcy was an active volunteer and was very involved with Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. She had a strong spiritual belief which has comforted both her and her loved ones during her life and especially during the last few months. She is survived by her husband, Michael Goggin, of Rapid City; her daughters Kathleen (Michael) Moen of Avon, Minnesota and Nadine (John) Norris of Los Osos, California; two brothers: Marcus Comes of Bend, Oregon and Jerome "Jerry" [Debbie] Comes of Black Hawk, SD; and two sisters: Louise [Charles] Girardi of Merced, California and Janet [Don] Hensley of Rapid City; grandchildren Hannah and Andrew Moen, and Kenzie Norris. She is preceded in death by her parents, brother, Andy Comes, and sister, Elaine Uttermark. Visitation will be on Wednesday, April 11, from 5 to 7 pm at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with a Christian Wake Service to follow at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered, Thursday, April 12 at 10 am with Rev. Brian Lane presided. Interment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. A luncheon will take place at the church after the burial service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Hospice of the Hills in Rapid City. Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
