Obituary

River Oaks, Texas - Marian Corlee Mills, 100, formerly of Rapid City, died Saturday, December 7, 2013 at the River Oaks Health and Rehab Center at River Oaks, TX. Marian Corlee Guess was born December 23, 1912 in Rogers, Texas. She was the oldest child of Jessie Catherine [Warner] and Benjamin Reynolds Guess. Her early childhood was spent in several towns in several southern cities. Eventually Jessie took the two girls, changed their name to Guest, and moved to Lincoln, Nebraska. Corlee graduated from Chadron High School in 1931, and got her Bachelor's Degree at "The Normal" in Chadron. Over her lifetime she taught in a number of grade schools in Nebraska and South Dakota. She has some interesting stories of her early years of teaching in country schools where she boarded in a local home and had to ride a horse to schoolquite an experience for a city girl. While in college she became friends with Dorothy Grow, and in 1939 she married Dorothy's brother, Clyde Grow. They originally lived on a small farm near Martin, South Dakota, but moved to Clyde's parents small ranch near Nenzel, Nebraska to help his father when Clyde's mother died and his younger brother went into the Army during World War II. Two children resulted from the marriage: Robert and Lynda. Another daughter died shortly after birth. Corlee and Clyde moved from the Cherry Country Ranch to Gordon, Nebraska where Clyde retired. She went back to Chadron State College and got her Master's Degree in Education in 1971. This qualified her to teach Special Education. Corlee always loved her students and went out of her way to give them the best education possible. Children, animals, and religion were very important to her. When Clyde died in 1969 after a rather long illness, she was alone and didn't take very good care of herself. Fortunately she eventually met an old friend from college days at Chadron StateFrank Mills. There were both teachingFrank in Oelrichs, South Dakota and Corlee near Gordon, Nebraska. There were married in 1973 and after they retired, lived at the Mills place east of Hill City, South Dakota. They had good years there before Frank died in 2005. Corlee stayed at the place for a time after Frank's death, but eventually moved to Texas with her daughter, Lynda. Her health slowly deteriorated and her last year was spent in a nursing home in River Oaks, Texas where she died. She is survived by her son: Robert Grow and his wife, Barbara of Hill City; one daughter: Lynda Fisher of River Oaks, TX; two grandsons: Tabor Fisher and Tyler Fisher; five great-grandchildren; and several step-grandchildren. Corlee was preceded in death by her parents, husband Clyde Grow and husband Frank Mills, one grandson, and one sister. Visitation will be Monday, December 16, from 12 noon to 1:00 pm at The Little White Church in Hill City with the Funeral Service at 1:00 pm at the church with Rev. Ron Walker officiating.
