Obituary

Marian C. Olson, 86, Rapid City, died Saturday, June 23, 2012, at the RCRH Hospice House, after her third bout with cancer. She was born April 25, 1926, to Carl and Lizzle (Solomon) Nelson and was delivered into this world by her father Carl on a farm north of Lemmon, SD. Marian had three brothers, Clifford, Lester "Jake", Robert; and two sisters, Goldie and Vera. She was raised on the farm and attended rural schools until leaving home during the week to attend Hettinger (N.D.) High School. This is where she met the love of her life, Ole Marvin Olson. When Ole returned from the Navy serving in World War II, they were married on October 27, 1946, making their home In Hettinger until 1949, when they moved to Rapid City to start a new life. Marian was first and foremost a wife and mother to her husband Ole and their two children Roger and Karla. During the years the kids were still living at home, she was the taxi driver, den mother for both the Cub Scouts and Brownies and room mother for both children when they attended grade school making special treats for the entire classroom on every special occasion. She loved being a grandmother more than she could ever express. She loved receiving phone calls, spending time together and would have done anything for them and her entire family. Marian was a quiet woman who enjoyed spending time with family; fishing, whether at Sheridan Lake, Oahu Dam or deep sea fishing off the coast of Washington. She loved to knit, crochet, go to dances with Ole at the Moose Lodge, Eagles and VFW where she is a member of the VFW Auxiliary, and for many years she went to the mall each morning to walk. In October of 2006 Marian and Ole celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. After Ole passed away in March of 2007, she spent a year alone, but loneliness was hard for this lady who had never in her life been alone. In 2008, with the urging of her daughter, she went to live with Karla and her husband Ray. Marian's health began to decline in the summer of 2010, when the osteoporosis caused several vertebrae to collapse. She was in and out of the hospital many times in her last two years, and had wonderful care from Dr. David Evans, Adam Haave and all the doctors, nurses and staff at Rapid City Regional Hospital. With the help of Sheila Kath, Pamela Pinney and the Visiting Angels, Marian was able to stay at home much of the time, where she wanted to be. Survivors include her son, Roger (Amylena) Olson, Rapid City; daughter Karla (Ray) Richey, Rapid City; grandchildren, Michael Richey, Rapid City and Shelby (Dan) Quilt, Rapid City; stepgrandchildren, Dennesa (Johnny) Linder, Summerville, SC, and Christopher (Heidi) Richey, Casper, WY; great-granddaughter, Raeanna Richey of Casper, WY; brother, Lester (Francis) Nelson, Hettinger, ND, sister, Goldle Dresden, Clovis, CA, and many nieces and nephews, She was preceded in death by her husband, Ole; parents, Carl and Lizzle Nelson; brothers, Cliff and Bob; sister, Vera and a son at birth.
